11/30: ‘9/12 Project’ Group in Illinois Valley Gaining Members
A national movement started by conservative commentator Glenn Beck is picking up steam in Illinois Valley, as the Cave Junction Chapter of the 9/12 Project continues to grow.
The 9/12 Project has been promoted widely by Beck, an increasingly popular Fox News television personality. It is designed to bring the nation back to the same sense of unity it had on Sept. 12, 2001, the day after the infamous terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center in New York City and the Pentagon in Washington, D.C.
11/30: Americans Still Leaning Against Health Care Legislation
Americans currently tilt against Congress’ passing healthcare legislation, with 49% saying they would advise their member to vote against a bill (or they lean that way) and 44% saying they would advocate a vote in favor of the bill (or lean toward advising a yes vote).
11/30: Call for Cameras in Congressional Committee Rooms
It’s not happening anytime soon… but Rep. David Dreier (R-Calif.) is calling for cameras to be installed in Congressional committee rooms. The call is certain to fall on deaf ears, but like Sen. Jim DeMint’s renewed (but probably futile) push for term limits, it should be applauded anyway.
11/30: Cato: ObamaCare Price Tag Is $6 Trillion
The advocates of ObamaCare argue that the overhaul of the American health-care system will cost “only” a trillion dollars in its first decade. Michael Cannon at the libertarian think tank Cato says that Congress relies on significant budgetary gimmicks to get to that number, and that the true cost of ObamaCare in its first real decade is six times that amount:
11/30: Dearth of Private Sector Experience in Obama’s Cabinet
Ed Lasky: Can we be surprised that Barack Obama would chose a Cabinet so unreflective of America?
After all, Barack Obama thinks that raising capital gain taxes will not harm economic growth; he taunts bankers with the prospect of pitchforks coming towards them; he condemns “greedy” doctors; who thinks imposing massive costs for each additional hire (think health care, think rules and regulations); he trumpets cap and trade as a panacea leading towards growth (well..at least in Al Gore’s wallet).
11/30: Government Integrity and Ethics
Monty Pelerin: The Federal Government admits to over $12 Trillion dollars in debt. In reality, its obligations are multiples of that number. The unfunded promises from Social Security and Medicare total around $100 trillion. To properly fund the forecasted future deficits in Social Security and Medicare, $100 trillion would have to be put in the fund today. Without this infusion, this liability grows exponentially. Next year, for example, it will be $4 – 5 trillion higher!
11/30: Doing Well Doing Good
This is the time of year when all of us think about giving back. But for some, it seems to be in their blood.
When Cory Doctorow co-founded the open-source software company OpenCola in 1999, he was just another techie genius. Then he had a discussion with people at the Electronic Frontier Foundation — a technology advocacy nonprofit and proponent of Internet civil liberties — and he became passionate about liberalizing copyright laws so he could help EFF provide citizens with greater access to and use of digital material.
11/30: Property Owners Get Dunked On
New York judges served up what basketball fans call a facial on Tuesday, when an appellate court ruled that the state may seize homes and small businesses in Brooklyn for the benefit of a private developer and the New Jersey Nets. The decision represents a backward step for the effort to protect property rights at the state level since the Supreme Court’s 2005 decision in Kelo v. New London.
11/30: Democrats in Revolt Over Barack Obama’s Troop Surge
Barack Obama’s much-vaunted eloquence faces the biggest test of his presidential career this week when he takes to the stage at West Point military academy to explain to a nation that thought it had elected an anti-war president why he is escalating the conflict in Afghanistan.
