When Politicians Yell ‘Fire!’

Beck: Is it more likely that Joe Wilson believed the president was misrepresenting the health care facts on illegal aliens or is it more logical to believe that Joe Wilson just doesn’t like African-Americans?

If Joe Wilson would have surrounded himself with blatant racists, if he went to a church with a racist minister, if his policies were based on race and racial justice — maybe you could make that case being made.

It’s like someone yelling “fire” in a crowded theater. If there’s a fire, then we must know about it. When there isn’t one, we should know about that too.

Perhaps Rep. Wilson should have thrown his shoes at the President.
The fringe media loved it last time that happened.

The timing of his utterance may have been innappropriate, but the substance was accurate.

    • madashell13 says:

That would have been GREAT!!! But he would have had to throw a white shoe and a black shoe to be fair.

    My Dear fellow commentators:

Maybe Joe Wilson doesn’t like Obama or may he doesn’t like his skin color. BUT here are the facts:
    1. Wilson stated in a public forum “You Lie” (I watched and heard it)
    2. Wilson apologized to the President
    3. Wilson wont apologize to the House or the Senate

Nowhere in Wilson’s actions or statement that night did I hear a reference to Obama’s heritage, race or even his mama. I heard an accusation of Obama’s truthfulness; ethical standing and a challenge to prove illegals will not get health insurance.

Maybe there is a history with Wilson but has he used his professional position to promote these thoughts? Or has he kept his personal thoughts and life separate from his professional life?? Humm… could it be that many legislators are feeling the heat from “We the People” and don’t like the bill anymore than we do and only Wilson had the gonad’s to state what others thought??
Come on how many of us thought that Obama told the American people the truth (okay may just a little truth)???

For many years I thought Jimmy Carter has done some good things around the world but his statement of how Wilson’s comment is a “race (skin color)” issue just floors me; how many KKK or Nazi wanabe’s have marched or posted flyers – you can bet that would make the mainstream news especially if it got squashed by the FBI or CIA or Secret Service.

Come on people, grow up. Demonstrate to me how two words be equal bigotry, racism, discrimination and hate here in America.

Im no racist just for speaking my mind . German, Irish, a splash of American Indian with a touch of Scottish/English tossed in. That me, My husband is 1/2Irish +1/2hispanic. My grand babies, the loves of my life, are from a Mexican National young man and my daughter, That makes them Hispanic, German, Irish, American Indian, Scottish/English Angels. It’s all just geography. We are Americans. Period. Many people want to just see themselves by their color. Is that all we area drop of pigmentation under the skin? Fine Obama is our 1st Black President . No offense but so what. His color is of no interest to the financial, political, emotional, or spiritual well being of my family It’s ones actions not ones color that makes you agree or disagree with how this administration is running our country. It’s ones merits only that he should and is being judged by. Just because I fundamentally and completely disagree with our current administration path for America, some in our country want to dismiss my views as racist. All I can say to these people is,”give it up” It’ll not change my opposition of this administrations policies just by calling me a racists, All it is doing is causing racial tension where there should be none. Are people so afraid to let this administration stand alone on its actions that we must try to make villains out of all Americans who disagree with the President? Washington needs to stop this game and get back to work on what’s broken in America cause there is a lot wrong right now. Health care, unemployment, cap n trade, acorn, taxation issues, true financial irresponsiblities in government: these are the problems for this country they need to focus on not if one person go so upset that they spoke out of turn to the president one time in their career.

  3. madashell13 says:

I agree with Jimmy Careter. It is extremely racist to call a black man a jackass. Therefore, Obama being half white, must be racist for calling Conyey West, all lack, a jackass. Where is the apology for that? Oh, maybe it is because it was done at a more appropo time? If timing is the issue, then Joe Wilson used perfect timing and Obama did not. Why is Obama not being forced to appologise to the American people for lying to them at a very inapropriate setting and very inappropriate time and place. Who is the real racist here? I will tell you…it’s the liar.

    • New Yorker says:

Use your spell check. Your argument may hold a little more water if you appeared to be literate. Then again, even spell check won’t help you there.

      • viper says:

Like a typical liberal you choose to try to throw out a distraction rather than focus on the issues.

        Answer me this New Yorker:

        1) How could Joe Wilson be a racist when he insulted someone who is half white? Does that make Wilson a half a racist?

        2) If this country is racist, how could Obama have been elected in the first place?

The bottom line is, the “racist” charge is nothing but a distraction to keep people from seeing what’s right in front of their eyes – OBAMA IS A LIAR AND HE LIED ALL NIGHT LONG in that speech.

      • painereader says:

Maybe Joe W. is half or quarter or whatever part racist. We have to judge him by his behavior — current and past.

A large part of America did not vote for the President. All the name-calling and personal attacks are not getting the USA out of the mess of debt, job loss and BS programs. Real leadership, informed support and sensible work will.

  4. painereader says:

Glenn, a question about “Principle 2. I believe in God and He is the Center of my Life”. What does that mean in your daily actions? How does it affect your decisions?

  5. MikeinIdaho says:

Ignore the trolls! They’re probably the same people who call us racists if we disagree with their messiah, Obama.
Joe Wilson was right, Obama did (and continues to) lie. If the trolls don’t like hearing that, I suggest they go elsewhere to comment. Otherwise, let’s continue to discuss the issues and leave out the personal attacks.

    • jimbo says:

      how did he lie?

Tell me, in any bill is there DEATH PANELS, is there rationing any different that the rationing of care that any health care group public or private provides today, is there funding for the training of medical professionals, the recent statements that disabled kids could be left to die is that in the bill.

If that was actually in the bill I would fight it with all my heart and blood BUT IT ISN’T.

If the new method of debate is you can invent things in bills that are not in the bill, and that saying that the bill is designed to kill the old and the disabled to gather support. Then we are about to find that nothing can happen.. and you will have one party rule because that will be the only way anything can get done.

It is like saying that the people that say that glen beck rapes and killed a kid is fair because even if it isn’t true it is just like saying that there are death panels in the bill.

What makes our society work is HONEST debate, that means you speak on the basis of fact.

There are many things in the bill that I have concerns about like how to pay for it, cost control, and yes will it limit medical liability.

      • csears00 says:

This forum is not about death panels or rationing but I would be happy to explain each of these to you. First of all, the specific point referenced by the “you lie” comment, was whether or not the current health care proposal covers illegal aliens. Mr. Obama said that it does not. Technically the bill states that illegal aliens are not covered but the bill then does not provide any means for determining a patient’s citizenship before being provided coverage. This loop hole allows illegals to be covered by the health care plan. Second, the “death panels” you refer to are actually part of the health care reform proposal, they are simply not called death panels. The health care bill specifically outlines that a panel of professionals will determine the costs and benefits of any treatment that a patient requests or requires. If the panel determines that the procedure costs too much for the benefit it provides, the patient will not receive the treatment. Personally, I don’t trust anyone to make a decision about what health care I receive except myself and maybe my spouse. Yes, currently insurance companies ration health care in this country which is exactly why requiring that everyone have insurance will not reduce the cost of health care or provide better health care to the public. People must understand that health insurance is an entirely different subject than health care.

      • jcs says:

00, I’ll pass on your comment justifying yelling “you lie” at the President. Maybe they’ll post my comment on that eventually.

But your comment on insurance is worth responding to. Your insurance company already makes decisions about your healthcare including what doctor you can see and what treatments are covered. They have a panel of accountants that decide how to maximize company profits. And the simple truth is, that every dollar they pay to your doctor is a dollar directly off their bottom line. Pure capitalism and you’re on the wrong end. It’s nothing personal, the insurance companies are simply maximizing profits whenever they can find a way to refuse claims or drop expensive clients altogether.

And unlike an insurance company, there is no panel that determines what treatments you PERSONALLY get. “You lie!” to quote Joe Wilson. You’d need a lot more than “a panel” to do that for every insured American. But let’s hope you or your family never get anything serious, or your insurance will be looking quite personally at your claims, and may start looking for reasons to drop you.

      • jimbo says:

        jcs

i understand capitalism, this is one hell of a deal for the insurance companies. the are getting a guaranteed market.. 10 – 40 million more customers depending on the data you use.

That is BILLIONS of new dollars and if the rest of the world is any example of what happens when you have a universal health care strategy here is what you get.

        1. The people live longer
        2. Cost is cheaper per person
        3. and in all but a few countries they still have a private healthcare system working with the public system.

In some nations private health care steps in and tries to build on what is missing in the public run system. Stupid business persons will die off in the new market smart ones will adapt.

        To the reality.

Your “Death Panel” you are says is so great.. the system that exists today with the private system you want to protect today. If you change the term to a life panel (a panel that is measure by how long you or a society lives) your panel is the 50th worst life panel in the world.. as a death panel..

in short the death panel you PROTECT FOR PRIVATE COMPANIES KILLS YOU FASTER than in 50 othr nations.

But this type of protest is common throughout the world, dates back centuries and it is very effective. This is an example of kind of protest or disrespect against the President that rises to that level, not for uttering two words Joe Wilson did. So let me get this straight. You are upset about what I’m guessing you see as people wanting scarlet red communism because they want healthcare for poor people and public education. Your solution is to send them to a remote region of the world where they can sit in a prison and rot for speaking out about what they want their government to do.

You realize thats how Stalin handled his political dissenters right? Ever hear of the Gulag?

    Glenn

or whoever reads this. im a “liberal” im 24, male, white, from iowa…im not playing the race card when i say there should be a penalty against wilson.(much more severe then he has receaved )not because what he said was racially motivated. because i dont think it was, but because it was both extremely unprofesional, and it was a stunt…now everyone who stands against him is “playin the race card” he is a US Congressmen.he should be more profesional than that. he should set an example by showing the RIGHT way to disagree, now shouting at the president while he is addressing congress. come on demostrate some profesionalism.

i do watch you often. not because im a fan, i watch mainly so i can attempt to gain a viewpoint on “the other side”
as well as for comic relief…

    • americanmomof5 says:

Ihateyoubeck///well isn’t that a nice user name. You liberals are scared. What’s the big deal about Wilson…..so he let his emotions get the better of him and his perspective. Aren’t we all guilty of that? Move on ihateyoubeck…the hypocracy of you liberals is something else…ihateyoubeck!!!!!by the way I LOVE YOU BECK!

    • DougR says:

The whole Joe Wilson thing is a tempest in a teapot, a diversion from the real issues. I’m conservative and while I don’t disagree with Wilson’s sentiment I think his timing was bad. He apologized and the President accepted it so lets the rest of us move on. If you want to talk about bad behavior in Congress though then we must bring up the astro-turf and un-American remarks directed at people who honestly oppose the Democrat’s proposals. And the race card that is so quickly played. I always thought the duty of our leaders was to try to lead ALL the people and not just supporters.

  17. xioni says:

Glenn Beck thinking that the charge of Wilson’s being racist is ridiculous is essentially as ridiculous as his charge that the president is a socialist/communist/fascist that is trying to destroy this country. But it’s a free country. Long live the first ammendment!

  18. JT says:

Well Rep. Pelosi, how many days and how many lawyers to work up to rebuking Rep. Wilson?

But no time to read the legislation on which you are voting?

Call them as you see them Rep. Wilson. And please continue to call them WHEN you see them – NOT at some other time more convenient to the opposition. My donation is on the way.

Per Winston Churchhill, “…we shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender…”

And I hope in the halls of Congress. If not in the halls of Congress, then it will surely end up being fought in the fields and in the streets.

  19. lubookworm says:

Since when did stating or yelling “You are a :Liar:” become a racial issue in the House of Congress. When I was growing up, the term “You Lied” meant that the person on the opposite side was accused of not being honest. Should it now be compare the statement of ” I did not Lie” Former President Clinton uttered under oath to the outburst in the House of Congress. Should one be compared to a Pimp and the other to a KKK Figure because of speech. The Senator was expressing his opinion, verbally without a cane or a dueling pistol. Maybe the outburst should have been kept for after the speech, but it a statement of his opinion not a racial slur. And as far as the Former President Carter, he stills breaks the unwritten agreement between the former Presidents to keep their nose out of the business of the White House. It is time for Obama to get off of the campaign trail and start to govern the country. He needs to try to remember that he has been elected, and now he needs to step up to the plate and start to govern instead of making stupid comments about people, He needs to remember to get something done, but not at the expense of my pocketbook. I work hard, pay for my own insurance, No one pays my apartment bill, auto bill and I do not have a bunch of kids being taken care by a government check,, to a lot of different fathers that are not present in their life. It is time for people to take responsibility for their actions and learn to step up to the plate of life. Not everyone is rich, not everyone is middle class and not everyone is poor, we are given a chance and it is up to us not the government for us to step up to the plate and take responsibility for our actions. It is time for morality, hard work and ethics to be placed back in the USA.

    • americanmomof5 says:

      AMEN!!!!!

      • ihateyoubeck says:

you said of carter “And as far as the Former President Carter, he stills breaks the unwritten agreement between the former Presidents to keep their nose out of the business of the White House. ”

so carter broke an UNWRITTEN rule…how dare he…wilson broke a ACTUAL rule…move on you crazy liberals?
now who is a hypocrite fella’s

(i know in this post i wasnt called a hypocrite…yet) but thats the general argument tonight so…

  20. DougR says:

I don’t believe that most people who have an issue with the President’s policies are doing it out of racial hatred. He has proposed sweeping and very expensive change. Change that has an uncertain chance of success in a time of economic trouble. The Democrats are trying to make America take a very hard left turn right now and yet they call out opponents as astro-turf, un-American, and now racist. Instead of the uniter he portrayed himself as in his campaign, Obama is in reality a divider, a polarizing figure who demonizes his opponents and thus is responsible for some of the vehement opposition he now faces. If he were to take a more centrist and negotiable position he might find a much more accepting public.

this is the thanks we get for marching on dc ! a site where we cant make our comments ! cant see our comments ect . as a loyal 9/12er i am very disappointed with this site now ! thanks glenn !!

  22. plowboy says:

The left keeps yelling racist in order to try to take the attention away from the real issues. The real issue is that theis country is on a swift down hill slide into socialism, fascism or marxism. obama is attacking every principle that this country was founded on. The first ammendment is under attack in his arrest and cruel treatment of Hal Turner as a way to shut him up. Your right to choose your health care, how you spend your money, how much you can earn and all of capitalism is under attack by obama and his ilk. Change you can believe in!

  23. New Yorker says:

For every one post of mine that makes it here, Glenn deletes 10. Why is he so afraid of me?

    • DougR says:

I don’t think Glenn is deleting them. I had trouble posting to this blog for a while, I also had trouble getting logged in properly. The last couple of days it has been working better for me. I have no idea why though.

    • New Yorker says:

DougR, I tried to comment directly to you, but it wouldn’t let me on. Thank you. –NY

  24. Joe Dirt says:

This race card is getting so old…I used to respect President Carter, but I think he just lost any credibility he had with me…now I think he is just another political hack trying to stir up unwarranted hate.
shame on you Mr Carter..what could possibly be gained by adding to an already uncomfortable situation? He (Mr. Carter) should just keep to building houses or peanut farming…he has already proven that he is not a good politician, and if he keeps up this rhetoric, he will prove himself not a good human either.
If the POTUS does a good job, I wouldn’t care if he was psychedelic. We, the white people keep trying to get past race, but nutty people keep playing the race card and taking us back to the 60’s style black hates white and vise versa. Jimmy has proven that he is just another left wing nutjob, out to make trouble where there is none…Shame

    • ihateyoubeck says:

so…you have the right to shout to the heavens your opinion but jimmy carter does not? why are we so angry if people disagree with us? was it racially motivated? no i dont think so…does carter have the RIGHT to believe and say that he thinks it was. he sure does…losing respect for him after this just means you couldnt have had much respect for him in the first place.

      • americanmomof5 says:

Well said….It took a Jimmy Carter to get a Ronald Reagan…Get my point?

      • HubOmbudsman says:

ihateyoubeck, mjs1951, and the others who are showing their hate here do not deserve a response from anyone. With their attitudes, they have no room to critize others about what they believe is racism, extremism, etc.

I do not fault Joe Wilson for his outburst, and am proud that he was willing to apologize to the President and hold his ground with all the other critics. With the White House and the Democratic Leadership refusing to allow a forum and discussion on the issues, I easily understand why Joe, as with many of us in America, is frustrated and reacted as he did.

Glenn, keep up the good struggle.
