This is good news. The discontent goes much deeper than has been reported previously. Let's hope these folks in Iran find greater strength when they see mullahs participating in these demonstrations.
I hope the clerics and the people of Iran experience freedom and justice. I hope the opposition leader is better than the incumbent.
The History of Republican Support for Democracy in Iran all of this the work of Republican DWIGHT D. EISENHOWER 1953-1961
In 1953, the CIA and British intelligence orchestrated a coup d’etat that toppled the democratically elected government of Iran. The government of Mohammad Mossadegh. The aftershocks of the coup are still being felt.
The CIA and the British helped to undermine Mossadegh’s government through bribery, libel, and orchestrated riots. Agents posing as communists threatened religious leaders, while the US ambassador lied to the prime minister about alleged attacks on American nationals.
Some 300 people died in firefights in the streets of Tehran.
The crushing of Iran’s first democratic government ushered in more than two decades of dictatorship under the Shah,
And your point is?
Iran is in turmoil and there are desperate cries for help. They were initilally ignored and Obama was finally convinced to dial up the rhetoric. Let's see where this administration takes this. I am begining to think of BO as Carter or steroids.
To No Snake Oil:
Since the 9-12 thread is closed I will respond to your comment concerning Obama and the Iranian Protests here. You stated " I have no desire to have us be Militarily involved in that regime change, but I would love it if Obama would step up and "not let this emergency go to waste". A few fiery words might be enough to spark a true revolution.
However after watching his remarks today where he freely admitted fear of his words being twisted, he seems to be willing not to utter any such inspiration."
If B_O would speak clearly and plainly his words wouldn't be twisted.
So far this morning there are continued protests and the people are being shot and beaten.
Mousavi’s wife Zahri Rahnavard has called for the release of all the activists and others arrested at protests.
Just in from Iran on CNN- Brutality, they are throwing people off bridges.- heartbreaking!

I hope BHO isn't planning to "dialogue" the Iranian representatives who only represent oppression, murder, and organized Basij thugs…
Lets hope the clerics, along with the whole country going on strike will help change the leadership soon, or many more will die, fighting for their freedom from dictatorship!
What do you think about the President offering the Iranian President to come to a Hotdog lunch? I believe this lunch will be given at an Embassy near you. When Iran is having such a problem with their election, why would Obama try to cuddle up to these dictators. Unbelivable, Just what is going through that brain of his?
President Reagan would stand up to the Dictators, not shower them with praise, and not want to be a buddy, just to suck up to people like Ahmadinejad!
I don't think that the clerics joiing the protests is important as much as our president has such a hard time taking a side. I know the job of a community organizer is to stir the pot, but at this point in time we need a leader who will take the ball and run. A person that will do the right thing no matter what the press may say. Hoping for change is like faith without works…dead!
I,m glad to see the clerics are getting involved, it makes the cause more important, and logitimate! Also if the country goes into a general strike, that will help!
If our government refrains from voicing support for these people, we will be accused of meddling and covert intervention. So if we are going to be accused why not voice our support. The government of Iran will continue to respond with ever increasing harsh treatment.
Are comments going into moderation again?
When this first started, I kind of agreed with BH), by keeping quiet. I figured that knowing Iran and its history, that this was just a "show", so I figured if he didn't say anything, it would maybe avoid The U.S. being used as a reason to crack down harder and more violently, BUT after 24-48 hours when it appeared this was real, BH0 should have stood up, but he didn't, he had to wait for the polls to say he should say something. This is completely unacceptable, Remember we are at war with this government, have been since 1979.
Now, BH0 is going to invite them to various embassies for a 4th of July picnic, I know the professionalizm of the MSG, but what a slap in the face it is to them. May I offer to supply the food for the picnic, cookout….some nice good old fashion BBQ spareribs and Hebrew International hot dogs, if they don't like it, let them eat bread.
Hope you all heard Rush today – in one of his first few segments, El Rushbo echoed OldMarine's suggestion to offer the Iranian dictators Hebrew (Inter)National hot dogs for lunch!
Remember folks, YOU HEARD IT ON 9/12 FIRST!
I don't know how, but somehow, the USA and/or Israel is going to be blamed, and Israel is going to catch it from the Iranians because the bully always picks on the little guy and not the big guy. Why? Because they can.

These marching mullahs could be going the way of some of the members of the Iranian National Soccer team,……………………………forced retirement.
Not sure Islamic clerics taking poltiical sides means a lot, since Islam seems to continually group religion and politics together all of the time anyway. The Sunni Shiite conflict is 1400 years old, if anyone is asking, since each of them, Sunni and Shiite groups, thought they should take over after Muhammed died in about 632 AD. So, if they can keep alive a 1400 year quasi religious ideology war going that long and still keep it at a fever pitch, this sort of is just more of the same.
Good point. It’s also noteworthy that some in the middle east said when we invaded Iraq that it was the return of the crusaders. This culture apparently never forgives or forgets anything no matter how many centuries ago it happened.
I'm not sure I agree with the mullahs being able to play both sides of this issue. Consider – if they are able to get this back into the box, the trust that they engender will be gone of they do in fact march for the wrong reasons. I believe that this is a symptom of a larger problem for the ruling elite when these mullahs broke from the ranks. This is potentially much more substantial, although I don't know wht their leadership or goals are. Miuns that – this isn't going to end nicely, whether with the current system thrown on the ash heap of history, or the glipse of freedom shuttered for the time being.
If the Iranian population implements (and maintains) a long term strike to bring commerce to a halt, they could put a lot more pressure on the country's leaders than simply demonstrating.
The demonstrations are going to get old and die out fast. A determined, unified strike could bring the country's leadership to its knees.
The question is, would the police start killing its own citizens?
I bet they wish they had a 2nd amendment in Iran right now.
"Ideas are more powerful than guns. We would not let our enemies have guns, why should we let them have ideas."….Joseph Stalin
This says it all.
"The question is, would the police start killing its own citizens? "
I'm afraid that question has been answered rather definitively.
The regime will quite literally stop at nothing to maintain power.
You know the trolls we get on here??? I think these Clerics are trolls sent to infiltrate the protesters and gather info on what is going on. Get in the email, cell phone, twitter crowd and report back. If this is happening, they will get enough information to crush the rebellion!! It will seem benign to begin with only to spiral into a violent ending.
Do you remeber how to kill Trolls….Let the sunlight shine on them, the same with the trolls that want to destroy America. That sunlight is truth, justice and the TRUE AMERICAN way. (Sorry Superman). We have to get the truth out, not the propganda.
The good part about the clerics joining the protests is that it may be able to prolong them without having a Tiananmen result. I feel the downside is that they may be just opportunists wanting to maintain the status quo, but seeking a political power grab should Ayatollah Khamenei be ousted along with some of the other clerics. They may just wish to co-opt the current movement to accomplish these aims. Iran is changing, and I doubt will ever be the same. The visage of that young girl, Neda, will forever portray the current regime with cruelty and illegitimacy…deservedly so. The population demographic has changed, and is weighted with a younger populace. Idealism usually accompanies youth so hopefully Iran's position with the West and Israel will become a more positive one. Time will tell.
At night they stand on the roof and yell "God is great, down with dictator." Hmm…not finding much fault with that. Knowing how they feel about Israel always gives me second thoughts to any of Iran's motives but the younger generation MIGHT care about peace more than war. "Woe to those who go against Israel" may just pertain to the US with the direction Obama is leading.
I see it as this: The clerics see the "soft" revolution getting out of control, growing, gaining momentum, turning into another "hard" revolution. A revolution where these hardliners will loose thier heads, so the Clerics are playing both sides of the fence, positioning themselves to be on the winning side no matter which side wins. They'll say, "See I was on your side." Obama is doing the exact same thing.
I say pick a side, support that side and bash the other side in the mouth until your side wins. Obama and the Cleric's are COWARDS for not taking the side of FREEDOM. But I would never expect anything more from a mealy mouth weasel like Obama.
NO, No the story is incomplete should read clerics and finally Obama joins the protest.
I think this is a great sign. The clerics are higher than the dictator on the food chain and their show of solidarity with the people in the streets is very telling. It is unknown whether the opposition candidate is truly different in his policies, but the people seem to feel he is.
Whats next President Panty-Waist joining the protesters or is he going to come out and tell everyone APRIL FOOLS I'm just kidding about all of this communist crap I spew day in & day out.
For some reason I think he is still hiding under his bed in his little pink bunny slippers
