If you've been a nurse for many years, you know how quickly all flu viruses can mutate. It's all in the RNA! But after watching season 3 of '24,' who knows? And if this virus was released by someone in an attempt to control or terrorize, just who might that have been? I would not put anything past Putin, Castro, Chavez, Ahmadinjead, bin Laden and a host of others. Was this a coup attempt within the USA? An attempt to get the POTUS to close and patrol our borders? A Rahm Emmanuel move to force sweeping changes in health care? Even a Blago revenge tactic? Any and all theories could be possible, but we will probably not ever know. Just have that N-95 ready. And pray that this doesn'tdecimateour military. What do you think about universal health care?
Nancy what I meant is the flu virus lose's viablity in warmer weather and goes dormant and the few that do come down with it usally suffer from mild symptoms but in cooler weather the virus is more active ie stronger. And this one seems to hit the healthiest the hardest.
Normally that is the case with most viruses–but not necessarily this one. Actually in central Mexico, even a month ago, it would be very warm in their environment. Mexico has both subtropical and tropical regions. Most viruses peak in cooler months because we are inside more often, in closer contact with each other. But now-a-days, especially with the advent of central air conditioning, viruses canpropagatejust as easily in summer as in winter. We know of a few pathogens that actually ramp up during air conditioning season (Legionnaire'sDisease, pseudomonas a.) because they multiply in air ducts. If this follows the same pattern as in 1918, this fall to next spring will be critical.
Hmmm did not think of those things but I am an engineer not a medical professional. At any rate I heard on the news this morning NYC is thinking about closing down more schools.
Nancy, what do you think about this H1N1 being a test platform for a more agressive virus being tested by someone? After many many years in nursing I just have a funny feeling about the circumstances surrounding this bug.
We are all on our own to take care of ourselves and all we can do to protect ourselves, our families and communities is to use common sense. Wash your hands often, get plenty of rest, drink plenty of water, eat healthy foods and fruits, avoid processed, fast food and sugary foods and drinks as much as possible (these processed and sugary items suppress our immune systems which leaves our bodies vulnerable to disease and illness), get plenty of fresh air and sunshine which is very important to our bodies. Just 15 minutes a day in the sun will help your body temendously both physically and mentally . Gather the whole family including the dog and take a walk, everyone will be happier and healthier for it and it is a great way to have "family time". Remember the old saying "an apple a day will keep the doctor away" Just these simple common sense items will build your immunities to the point where you may not get ill and if you do, you will be able to fight off illness rather quickly. If you take care of your body, your body will take care of you and you won't have to wait for or require flu immunizations.
Folks, listen up. NancyNurse has been commenting for the benefit of your health. You can yak on about conspiracy aand so on all you like.
There is a point of common sense that should be the first thing on your list, that is to be informed and respond appropriately to care for you, your family and neighbors.
I come from a quality engineering background and worked in implantable medical devices (artificial veins) for many years. There is a point where the illness or result that is outside of normally occurring ranges should be taken seriously for responsible, specific action.
If we want to take the discussions on this board to a level that demonstrate our capacity for leadership, then let's have a little self-discipline and manage ourselves to a higher standard.
I know that if I expect to have my fellow citizens watch my back and protect my freedoms as a fellow patriot, then I want to see that we know how to listen when that is the right thing to do.
Now, check the CDC website, follow preventive precautions and do your best to be part of the solution and not part of a problem. Following rant and rumor mongering does not demonstrate an immunity to propaganda and foolishness.
Sorry if I offended anyone, but there are times we need to get back on task and stay there.
All Nurse nancy is doing is spreading fear, leave that to TASS. Total of 6-7 people died as direct cause of the swine flu. I agree, give it a rest.
Yes, so far the death toll is low, so far. It is the characteristics of the outbreak and the public's overall lack of respect/preparation for an infectious disease breakout that concerns me.
The story merits monitoring over the next few months. It was in the autumn that the 1918 flu did it's worst.
I have 11 grandchildren in the age bracket where most of the victims have been, so it's relevant to me personally.
When I see someone like NurseNancy trying to get some factual information on the board, it seems worthwhile to support her effort. It's easy to get shouted down in a public forum, sometimes it's a troll thing, sometimes not.
We're all doomed! Doomed, I tell you!
I hope this flu spreads through the congress and the White House!
I want to apologize for that last remark. I wanted to see if I could be more like the left and people like Wanda Sykes, but it's just not funny. I'm guessing you guys didn't think it was funny either. It's really sad that their vicious attacks and hate are so effective and found to be universally inoffensive, even amusing, by the vast majority of the population, but any comment by the right that can even be twisted into something it's not, causes a huge backlash.
WE ONLY HAVE 2 WEEKS TO PREPARE! May 30th…Healthcare-now is having rallies Nationwide to promote
HR 676. Get together with your local groups to oppose these rallies. Find where they are holding a rally near you and let them know that Government run Healthcare is NOT the solution, but the death of quality healthcare and patients rights to choose and get medical treatments they need. Here is their website…..TAKE A STAND!

I wish TASS and others would stop being fear mongers, as of now 6-7 people have died as a direct result of the swine flu. How many people during the regular flu season have died in the same time period? Many more. Use your common sense, if you have any, you know how to keep you and your family safe and healthy. If you think you may be feeling under the weather, drink plenty of liquids, get plenty of rest, take aspirine, have some chicken soup and call me in the morning, and if you don't feel better in a couple days, go to the damn doctor.
The Summer Flu will give us all something to look forward too. It will be nice to see if we will close our borders or act like last time and treat it as a minimal threat. We were lucky last time but next time it may be deadly serious. I guess Homeland Security may react to this time unless they are too busy with those Tea Party Terrorists.
I know this could be serious but if the government does not take it serious we are really in deep doo. If they don't ground all planes, limit travel and recommend masks, it will spread like wild fire. If it is as serious as it sounds we are really in for a bad time.
There are a lot of teachers in my family including my husband. Most of them think the same way. Parents should have kept their kids home from school if they have a temperature. Parents send their kids to school as long as the school is open. The school has become babysitter not a teaching tool. Over the last few weeks my sister has sent a number of kids to the school nurse. In turn the nurse has had to send the kids home. They did not have the H1N1 virus but one of them did have strep throat. This could have spread throughtout her school. Why don't parents pay attention to their kids when the kids tell them they don't feel good?
The flu of 1918 began in the spring, just as ours has. The pattern of morbidity and mortality, even spread has been remarkably similar. Our best hope is good clinical care and a good immunization program against it by next year.
What were the statistics of youth vs. adults that were initially impacted by the flu of 1918? I know there are a lot of similarities (including the strain of flu). I want to make sure, however, that we keep our heads on. My question is an honest one just as previous ones have been honest questions.
While I don't want to see a pandemic occur, I do want to know where similarities and differences are between the two so as to be as prepared as possible.

A little distraction while "The One" takes over some other aspect of our lives, perhaps?
That is as ridiculous as saying George W Bush 'caused' hurricane Katrina and the levees to fail. Obama can no more control a viral outbreak than you or I can.
Sorry, I didn't mean that he could control it. I meant that the running-chicken-with-it's-head-cut-off reaction might be a distraction while Obama takes over more of our freedoms. Sorry for the "misspeak"!
Watch what the other hand is doing!
No, watch how many people on here will spread lies and superstition so that many people will die instead of just a few.
At first I thought I might be a little too dismissive of the whole Swine Flu deal, but when I looked at national statistics of how many people die and for what reason annually, it became more and more evident it was just another attempt by the media to capitalize on personal tragedy while stoking the fire of humanity’s fear of death.
Number of deaths for the 3 leading causes of death in United States in 2005:
•Heart disease: ………………………………………………..652,091
•Cancer: ……………………………………………………..559,312
•Stroke ……………………………………………………. 143,579
Number of Deaths from H1N1 Swine Influenza in United States in 2009:………………………………………….6
Factual statistics tend to introduce perspective in a way that the best of talking heads could never read from a teleprompter.
Your stats are misleading. The conditions listed here are all significant but take years to develop and take a life, and cannot be spread from one person to another. We are at war with this tiny virus just as much as we are at war with jihadists. And those stats from 2005 are for the ENTIRE YEAR for whole categories of chronic illness whereas this H1NI novel virus is for about one month and has not even begun to spread widely yet. There is a real possibility that H1N1 Novel is deadly enough to kill more Americans than OIF and Katrina combined. Chew on that one………
Nancy do not forget that this showing up at the end of the flu season when the virus is weak. What happens in the fall when the virus if it still around picks up again. No we need to be viligant on this one folks. Particularly since it seems to hit young people and children harder than it should even in a weakened state.
Not to mention man made caused deaths such as abortion which at 3000 a day would be over 1 million a year. In just 2 years deaths from abortion just in the US seem to equal the 2 million deaths by the evil Kmer Rouge in Cambodia. But of course, we cannot mention that since those deaths are a feature, say the people who control the term "politically correct".
<a href=”http://www.htmlbible.com/abortstats.htm” target=”_blank”>http://www.htmlbible.com/abortstats.htm
Damned if you do and damned if you don't. This over-reaction is unfortunate. Better to be prepared than caught off guard. This strain of flu IS behaving differently. We need to be aware. That's all.
AWARE for now…….prepared for later………and hopefully ABLE to PREVENT in future!
I seem to recall a couple weeks ago the CDC and the O’blama White horse saying that we are thought the worst of it and no need to close any more school, no problem everyone just go about your business, yea right.
I would have more confidence in Moe Larry and Curly Joe.
I didn't hear any such words from either the CDC or Obama. Check out the CDC website. It has very up to speed info on it.
Actually Obama did come out and say that..just like he has with the economy. However you are correct with the CDC, I don't recall hearing anything out of that organization other than them lifting the travel advisory to Mexico this past week.

As I said they are not supporting the school closing, now if a school has a lot of kids running around
that are infected and not yet sick, that would be a bad thing. Better to send them home for a week or two.
How is that not the best way to help.
This is stupid if a school has any sick students or teachers or administrators they should look very carefully at
that school.
My post above has some satire but they are in denial about this problem.
These stupid Flu stories are distraction of the important issues!!! The American Economy, Liberty & Freedom are on life support and it's not from the Flu!!! Give the Flu stories a rest!!
If you are dead, the economy sure won't matter. This story is every bit as important as 'guns control' or 'abortion' which really effect only limited amounts of people. Keep up the good work, Glenn and 9/12 project in keeping us abreast in ALL areas of news, not just those that make Obama look stupid.
Those links are a lot of reading, hope you do not mind that I sent them. I am not given to conspiracy theorizing, but connecting some dots does make one wonder.
I'm sorry, but I've seen too many of these \”doomsday\” virus in my time to and heard all the \”public\” good advice, just to see it fade away. Remember the bird flu and how it was going to destroy all of mankind, how about west nile fever? Common sense, is the only prevention methods.I said it before, the last flu shot I had was my last year in the Corps in 1982, since then I've miss work 3 times due to either a bad cold or flu. I don't take any precautions, just continue to live my life. If I get sick, well, I get sick. I haven't been to a Dr. since my discharge physical.
There is a one day prodromal period of the virus BEFORE symptoms begin and the person becomes sick. All folks with fevers and cough, malaise, or runny nose would be kept away from others and excluded from school (and recommended to go get a viral swab). NYC might be equipping schools with viral swab kits. It takes just minutes to confirm if the person has flu and which type. The one day that they are not symptomatic but shedding virus is the most important. Usually the first 24-48 hours is when the virus is strongest and sheds the most. That one day gap is why you can't really isolate flu easily.
Who says it is weak? the 1918 flu began at the same time of year and by the end of the year was on its second wave. And yes, you are right…..usually flu hits the very young and very old, but this flu is hitting those in between and anyone with any kind of chronic conditon needs to be especially wary. I cancelled a trip to TX next month. I cannot afford to get this flu.
