It's a sad state of affairs when this country cannot/will not defend itself against some ragtag pirates.

  2. If you spray these scallywags with lead instead of water, in 2 months, this wouldn`t even be an issue anymore!

  3. Jaopfer says:

Yes, you are right, we can't even joke anymore. Remember the good old days, when we had freedom of speach. Still, I am a grandmother and a Christian and although I have no fear, I do not want to stoop to that level. I have great respect for you, and would not want to put you into any type of compromising position. Once again thank you for serving your country.

  5. suthin_man says:

Why not hire out ex-military or one of the fine security companies that have mercs working for them. Give them free rein to use what ever tactics they see fit to stop pirate activities. Then put a bonus on each and every pirate that is taken out. Allow the mercs to use cigarette boats to run them down and terminate with extreme prejudice!!! Puts people to work and gets rid of a problem.

  6. irondogkk says:

I disagree….. the actions taken by the Lewis and Clark were cowardly….. (this is strictly my opinion) …… They should have allowed the skiffs to come along side and then they should have taken the pirates hostage and THEN demanded a $100 million dollar ransom for them!!!! One of those fight fire with fire kinda things!!

Its a sad day in America when pirates try to capture a US Navy Ship and the Navy has to run away. This is comedy to me. The protocol for dealing with pirates is to run away? I guess its in their commercials… " The Navy, accelerate your life" Yeah, accelerate when you need to run away and hide from the scary pirates . Good going US Navy, thanks for your dedication and service. You honor all the men that fell at Pearl Harbor. Is it me, or are a bunch of little girls running the government? Why didn't they track these guys and capture or kill them? I stand firm in my conviction that the US Navy should be a proud occupation and they should not run in fear from violence. If they had half a brain, they would bring the violence when attacked by a hostile force. Thanks for making the whole world less safe.

That POS has had nothing but a muslim agenda from the beginning. He will gut this country to the point it will be a cakewalk for any takeover! What will help is to get the state legislatures involved with a bill like Montana,Utah and Tx are passing that allows citizens of a state to manufacture ammo, weapons ,own weapons ,etc without any federal government interference. In other words giving sovereignty back to each state like our forefathers envisioned. TAKE THE TEETH FROM THE FEDS AND THEN THEY CAN'T CONTROL US LIKE THEY WANT!

  12. Jaopfer says:

I knew there was more to this story! Your version makes alot more sense.

  13. TomUSAFRet says:

Oh sure, blame the pirates. Just like Fox News and Glenn Beck, always hating minorities. The REAL story is this. The U.S. Navy was carrying 320,000 cases of Budweiser as bait, just HOPING that some poor Somalis would take the bait. To sweeten the pot, the U.S. Navy was also flying a flag which read "This Bud"s for YOU!" So naturally, the thirsty Somalian fishermen would want to pull aside such a vessel to quench their thirst. Were they allowed to? The U.S. Navy says 'No!" and starts yelling at them to back off. The Somalis, desperate for a cold drink, fire small arms into the air and beg to be taken aboard, but the heartless U.S. Navy says, "No, this Bud's for US!" The Somalis then head back to port, in despair that their overtures of friendship were rebuked and their thirst unquenched.

Barack Obama, when told of this incident, hung his head in shame over the conduct of the U.S. Navy. Michelle Obama, not having any sackcloth or ashes handy, donned a pair of off-the-rack Adidas and a sweatshirt purchased at KMart. That's what really happened.

    • Jaopfer says:

I knew there had to be more to this story! Your version makes alot more sense.

      • TomUSAFRet says:

Thank you. I'm glad you are a perceptive person who knows the truth when you see it. And may I say, in the hope that Muslims everywhere will be offended, may our Lord Jesus Christ richly bless you and your family.

    • justaroot says:

Finally, we have an insider to give us the real story. :) Im just glad they didn't have to break beer bottles and use them to fend off pirates. Broken bottles would be more weapons than most ships seem to have. If I had a ship, I would cover the deck with rottweilers and barb wire. If any pirates made it through, I wouldn't hesitate to stab them with a can opener.

    • bipartisan says:

Well said, but are you sure that you haven't divulged a national secret?
Are you sufficiently cleared to know this stuff?

  14. While this is a USNS ship (meaning it has a civilian crew) it did have a security team on board. With the kind of threat that was present, there should have been little reason why the team could not have taken these pirates under fire. Intent and force were demonstrated, there was legal basis to shoot at or hit them.

Running away without making them think twice about attacking US flagged ships gives them the opportunity to review their tactics and change them. I applaud the fact that none of our people were hurt. I think an error in judgement was made by not engaging them – even if it was to scare them off.

  15. goldnhorde says:

(from the article)"Merchant mariners can and should use Lewis and Clark's actions as an unequivocal example of how to prevent a successful attack from occurring," he said.(end article)

For those of you at home taking notes …. the Navy's secret weapon that everyone should use … "GO FAST!!!!"

it's just that easy. up till now everyone was just seeing pirates and pulling over like they got caught in a state cop's speeding trap, i guess.

    "GO FAST!!!!"

I saw this article title and thought I missed something good … (sigh)

NOTRE DAME, May 8 /Christian Newswire/ — Former U.S. Ambassador and Presidential candidate Dr. Alan Keyes is currently in Jail; along with over 20 anti abortion activists.

They were arrested at Notre Dame for peacefully, quietly, walking on campus with baby carriages carrying dolls covered with stage blood.

Randall Terry, leader of StopObamaNotreDame, states:

"Notre Dame arrests Christians who defend babies, and honors a man who kills them. This is an open wound in the Church. The question is this: Will a Catholic Bishop step up and demand this betrayal of the Faith be brought to a halt?"

Video of arrests: A You Tube video will be posted soon of the arrests. Please keep checking at http://www.StopObamaNotreDame.com

  18. I think that the shipping companies can send a few crew members to a training camp on defense and us of firepower I know of more then one weapons class instructors who are well qualified and will to train them this would cost a few thousand dollars a a lot less then the money they pay the pirates Dead men don't come back again Shoot to KILL

  19. PirateNPink says:

The Lewis and Clark sped up and tried to escape the pirates, and the ship's security team issued verbal warnings to the approaching skiffs, the Navy said.

VERBAL WARNINGS? Times Outs in the time out corner are next I'm sure!

    • PirateNPink says:

on second thought, IT'S THIS STORY THAT MAKES ME WANT TO SCREAM

      • Shadrach says:

Rules of engagement PirateNPink. They are handcuffed!!! It puts them at such a disadvantage. I believe
B.O.& Co. micromanage them to the point of insanity!! You know, I know, the commanders know, their jobs!!
The captain being taken hostage is a prime example, the whole fiasco screams of it!! It should be this scenario:
Commander: Mr. President, we were fired upon, we returned fire and blew them out of the water, no survivors.
        President: Good job Commander!!

  20. billnpat says:

Sorry, I lost my head for awhile. The idea of a new, improved pirate ship sound great! (Maybe we can make the keel dissolve on exposure to salt water or fall off at attack speeds?)

    Bill

  21. Terlizzi999 says:

I agree with the fact that this was not a warship but a support ship who's crew was more than likely mostly civillian and not military and any arms on board would have been few an far between. Please stop over-reacting as if it was a warship. Now with that said, if there was not a security detatchment on board which kept them from repelling boarders that would be criminal.

However, some bit of good news is on the way as the navy's new Littoral ship class is built for anti-piracy duties among others and is perfect fit for this operation and the first ship in this class is expected to join the flotilla in anti-piracy duties however 1 ship is not going to stop it. Time to deploy whats termed a "Q" ship and hunt them down.

    • The LCS is over budget and probably won't see the light of day beyond those already built.

And even though this was a USNS ship, they did have the ability to take them under fire with the embarked security team.

  22. acheyjake says:

I can hear the pirates telling their fellow pirates that the U.S. Navy ran away.

    Somali Cruise Package
This is the best idea yet. Be sure and read the whole thing. I was checking cruise lines because I heard the rates are very cheap right now.

I found a Somali cruise package that departs from Sawakin (in the Sudan ) and docks at Bagamoya (in Tanzania ).
The cost is a bit high @ 800 per person double occupancy but I didn’t find that offensive. What I found encouraging and enlightened is that the cruise is encouraging people to bring their ‘High powered weapons’ along on the cruise. If you don’t have your own weapons you can rent them right there on the boat. They claim to have a master gunsmith on board and will have reloading parties every afternoon as well as optional marksmanship training. The cruise lasts from 4-8 days and nights and costs a maximum of $3200 per person double occupancy (4 days). All the boat does is sail up and down the coast of Somalia waiting to get hijacked by pirates. Here are some of the costs and claims associated with the package.
    * $800.00 US/per day double occupancy (4 day max billing)
    * M-16 full auto rental $ 25.00/day ammo at 100 rounds of 5.56 armor piercing ammo at 15.95
    * Ak-47 riffle @ No charge. ammo at 100 rounds of 7.62 com block ball ammo at 14.95
    * Barrett M-107 .50 cal sniper riffle rental 55.00/day ammo at 25 rounds 50 cal armor piercing at 9.95
    * Crew members can double as spotters for 30.00 per hour (spotting scope included).
    * Wow – they even offer RPG’s at 75 bucks and 200 dollars for 3 standard loads
    * “Everyone gets use of free complimentary night vision equipment and coffee and snacks on the top deck from 7pm-6am.”
    * Meals are not included but costs seem reasonable.
    * Most cruises offer a mini-bar… these gung ho entrepreneurs offer……… get this…..
    * “MOUNTED MINIGUN AVAILABLE @ 450.00 per 30 seconds of sustained fire”
    * (Sign me up for that!)

They advertise group rates and corporate discounts……and even claim “FUN FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY”
They even have a partial money back offer if not satisfied….here’s some text from the ad.

“We guarantee that you will experience at least two hijacking attempts by pirates or we will refund half your money back including gun rental charges and any unused ammo (mini-gun charges not included). How can we guarantee you will experience a hijacking? We operate at 5 knots within 12 miles of the coast of Somalia . If an attempted Hijacking does not occur we will turn the boat around and cruise by at 4 knots. We will repeat this for up to 8 days making three passes a day along the entire length of Somalia . At night the boat is fully lit and bottle rockets are shot off at intervals and loud disco music beamed shore side to attract attention. Cabin space is limited so respond quickly. Reserve your package before the end of May and get 100 rounds of free tracer ammo in the caliber of your choice.”

As if all that isn’t enough to whet your appetite, there were a few testimonials
    * “I got three confirmed kills on my last trip. I’ll never hunt big game in Africa again. I felt like the Komandant in Schindlers list!”—- Lars , Hamburg , Germany
    * “Six attacks in 4 days were more than I expected. I bagged three pirates and my 12yr old son sank two rowboats with the mini-gun. PIRATES 0 – PASSENGERS-32! Well worth the trip. Just make sure your spotter speaks English” – Ned, Salt Lake city , Utah USA
    * “I haven’t had this much fun since flying choppers in NAM . Don’t worry about getting shot by pirates as they never even got close to the ship with those weapons they use and their squirrelly aim—reminds me of a drunken ‘juicer’ door gunner we picked up from the motor pool back in Nam”—“chopper’ Dan —-Toledo USA.
    * “Like ducks in a barrel. This is must do!
Finally, someone had the common sense to cash in AND solve a major problem. These folks deserve a medal!

    • TomUSAFRet says:

Wow…this is my entry from a few weeks ago:

Why do the Navy SEALS get to have all the fun? Here's a plan. Lots of people would love to go on a cruise, and quite a number have always dreamed of going on an African safari. So why not combine the two? Imagine the ads: "Sail on the Festival Gun Ship! An all-inclusive, 7-day cruise off the East Coast of Africa. We provide the guns (your choice of caliber), up to 2,000 rounds of ammo (you may purchase more from the purser), and plenty of towed targets located port, starboard, and aft which you may practice on at your leisure. Pirates are plentiful in these waters, so there will be no shortage of live targets! But remember, they sometimes shoot back! So enjoy fine dining, cold drinks on the Promenade Deck, and a chance to grease a Somali pirate! Discounts are available for those passengers who wish to bring their own guns and ammo!" Where is my travel agent???

    • MikeinIdaho says:

Where do we sign up? Thanks for making my day!

  24. You just can't kill the Presidents relatives Abongo'' Roy'' Obama, or George Hussein Onyango Obama so cut the US Navy some slack. http://anti-msm-news.blogspot.com/

  25. RNHunter says:

Has anyone other than me looked on a map and noted that Somalia and its pirates are adjacent to Obama's country of ancestry Kenya? Note also that Somalians are reputedly not like American children who grow up wanting to be policemen or firemen, they supposedly desire to become pirates. Clearly piracy in that region is not only condoned but glorified as a wonderful way of life to strive for. While I was born and had instilled in me a love of our country the USA, its military and its great land of opportunity, maybe, just maybe, Obama was being taught, well, something very different. Maybe we should have listened when Michelle Obama said she was never proud of the USA.

  26. I can see the Navy captains dilemma, shoot and kill the pirates and face charges by the Obama administration for daring defend America, capture the pirates and just end up watching them get released by one of Obama's leftist judges who rule based on social justice rather than the rule of law.

    • burntfrost says:

Your interpretation has made the most sense so far. Obama prefers for us to be a nation of capitulators rather than conquerors, and that applies to the military as well.

    • MikeinIdaho says:

If they engage the pirates far enough at sea, who's gonna' know what happened if the pirates end up fish food and their boat is sunk. If I'm the captain, and did get caught killing them all, I would rather beg forgiveness than ask permission to fire! (But I'd skip the "begging forgiveness" part, too.)

  27. Starwings says:

When deciding whether to engage a target or not you have to consider the cost of the weapon you are using compared to the value of the target. Bullets are expensive and the cost of cleaning the weapon after use must be considered. In short, the pirates were not worth the cost of the bullets. By not engaging, the naval ship gave the pirates the equivalent of the middle finger.

    • Jerseygal says:

And how much extra fuel did the Lewis and Clark burn running away? That cost should be considered, too. In reality, it would offset some of bullet cost. I think weapon cleaning goes on with or without firing, salty sea air, ya know!

  28. I say when they capsize a pirate boat trying to board, they should steam away without saving them. I hear that Somalia doesn't prosecute so not saving them is a real service to those who use those shipping lanes.

  29. Nomarxism says:

So the new Obambi policy is to run away? I must be misinterpreting the article.

  30. Lysander says:

BLOOD SHOOTING OUT OF MY EYES! My grandfather, a Navy fighter pilot and retired as Cmdr., must be spinning in his grave and is hurling thunderbolts at whoever authorized this. Unless this ship was totally unarmed, this was a bloody disgrace. How dare we tempt our enemies with weakness! We are asking for the jackals to bite us. God Help Us.

  31. americanj says:

These pirates are merchant marine organizers(community organizers)- a wing of Obama's ACORN group. He has to protect them.

    • Docadams says:

Don't forget muslims, he has to protect them too. In fact the only people Obama doesn't seem to be protecting is Americans. Oh and Jews, Obama doesn't think too highly of God's Choosen.

  32. derick71 says:

Wow… simply amazing… That's Class B wuss… Might as well bump it up to Class A and chunk $2mil off the back of the ship for 'em to scoop up…

Bad message here, if this ship is indeed armed enough to engage…

  33. Jerseygal says:

Always stay on offense. Never act like a victim – then you probably won't become one. Don't start backing up in a fight – make the other back up. No matter what, always keep thinking – and that's hard to do when you're running away – from anything.

Just some advice I grew up with from Dad (non-military, farmer, steelworker), my brothers…..

  34. lornaduwn says:

The way I see it, the United States can do one of two things at this point. We can either ignore this incident and let the world think we are a nation of cowards, thus encouraging future attacks from pirates and terrorists alike. Or, the United States can use this as a chance to show that we are not the aggressors but will in the future not run from attack. Obama should make an announcement now that states that anyone firing on an American military vessel, any vessel flying the American flag, or any vessel flying the flag of any nation that requests our aid in this matter will be immediately fired upon by the military.

  35. Jerseygal says:

Now I'm not a pirate or anything, but if I were, this would prompt me to use the ransom $ I obtained by successful pirate ventures to purchase a faster pirate vessel and longer-range weapons. I know I'm thinking like a capitalist, but after all….they apparently want to continue their pirate enterprise and succeed with it despite losing 3 of their own to our Navy Seals.
That's enough of being silly….Why the he!! is our NAVY running away from a high seas assault? They should return fire, and by blowing a few pirate vessels out of the water they may actually deter piracy! Is this BH0's directive? When attacked, run?

    • Shadrach says:

That's probably what he was taught all his life, it's all he knows. Now he is bringing the most powerful military in the world, down to his own level.

  36. Docadams says:

I see it as another example of a weak foriegn policy. Mark my words, Americans are going to die if we continue down this path of apeasing our enemies.

  37. triper57 says:

Run Forest Run. I realize this is a supply vessel but I bet that they have at least 50 cal machine guns on board. You can sink most of the pirate vessels I've seen on the news with a 50 cal. And still stay out of the range of the weapons that the pirates carry. Shame on us for running.

  38. ashaw13601 says:

a us navy ship out runs a pirate attack, does anyone realize how rediculous that is? last time i checked this is the USA and the navy ship should have shot the hell out of the pirates, but they didnt because they are scared to defend themselves because of the administration and the left wing news media will be calling for legal action aganst the person who gave the ok to attack. in my opinion, i think we should send a message to somalia and send a few thousand troops there and kick the crap out of them….but of course clinton just wants to take the taxpayers money and dump it in that crap hole called somalia to "help educate" them and "teach them new ways to make money". this administration is a joke and they are making the USA wide open to an attack.

    • Shadrach says:

Admiral Bull Halsey is probably spinning in his grave. The site administrator would pass out from the expletives he would use if he could comment on this subject here.

  39. eschrag says:

Run, boy! Run like the wind ….. boy!

  40. MikeinIdaho says:

And they could hold hands and sing Kumbaya!!!!

  41. MikeinIdaho says:

Actually, I believe that the Lewis and Clarck is a USNS ship, manned by American civilians and a Navy/Marine Corps security force. It is not manned by US Navy sailors alone.

    • RobertCA says:

I feel bad for them for not having having orders to blow up these Terrorists , it's not good for them & not good for the US , this guy is putting us down day after day after day , I'm tired of hearing his apologies & excuses .

  42. CULATR2 says:

If they shoot at you, obliterate them. It's legal. Go for it. If anybody comes into my house illegally looking to do harm or rob me, they are not going to like MY response. It won't take long and it will be lethal. That is also legal in my state.

  43. EGoldstein says:

They always tell you running away is the best thing to do. They are probably right. No point in killing them. Like leftists, there is an endless supply of thugs.

  44. Siggy40 says:

Hmmm. Maybe BHO should have just "bowed" to them to and then they would want to be our friends. Oh, wait, he can only "walk" on water…

  45. Is Obama trying to give Eric Holder some credibility by showing the world that we are, in fact, a nation of cowards? I am truly disgusted.

  46. Brian says:

Now the pirates now know we wont fire on them afer they fire on us. If that ship was not equipped with weapons, I am sure, if a carrier is within 1000 miles, a plane could have been there in an hour and taken care of the problem. The real problem is BHO has no BALLS. Blow the crap out of them and the problem ends. Allow them to get away so they can attack another day. Whats wrong with this picture. By the way BHO, Stop making "this" clear. Everytime he speaks, I hear this phrase come out of his mouth. Show me, Don't tell me!

  47. alntht says:

The article mentions evasive maneuvers and "onboard security teams" as good ways to prevent being taken captive by the pirates…does that mean that cargo ships can have armed on-board security teams? I want that job…

  48. PConnelly says:

    End the madness.

Put HOGS on the ships the Pirates will not board.
They are deadly scared of PORK. Another way is do not shot water at them, throw PORK CHOPS.

    Logical

    • RusSEAL says:

Pork tallow bullets & a warning before opening fire. Full auto with squad automatics.

Vietnam Vets didn't call the M-60 machine gun "The Pig" for nothin'… *sly wink*

      RusS out.

  49. Want them to leave us alone? Blow them out of the water instead of running from them! No wonder they keep trying.

  50. GRuss says:

The Liberal Press would have labeled it as racist to fire on the poor pirates that don't have any other way to make a living for their families. And they couldn't possibly have been able to do any harm.

  51. TDCobra says:

Leave it to DEAR LEADER WIMPY CHIA PET to stick his tail between his legs & run like the little wus he is. This is just more proof that DEAR LEADER has no idea what it is he is doing & is to damn supid to try & learn anything because he is the smartest man on earth don't you know. For some reason I think my pet dog is smarter but hey that's just me.

    • Jerseygal says:

No, your dog is smarter, and far more loyal.

    • ciberhuff says:

While it might appear to a patriot that BHO might be a coward, or stupid, or both, it's more likely that what appears to be failures in US policy is really his agenda in action. We have never had someone in the oval office with quite the perspective he has about freedom, equality, and justice. There have been some real challengers in the past, but no one can come close to the extent of damage he has done in his first 100 days of office. We are slow to comprehend the vision of a socialist. This Memorial Day, we should remember the what it was that our troops have died for–Each one who has served has taken the oath to defend the Constitution against enemies foreign and domestic. Those who have fallen in battle fought the foreign enemies; it is now time for us now to take up the banner and fight the domestic enemy that is destroying our heritage, our Constitution, and our country. Ultimately, when freedom is sacrificed at the altar of equality, there is little chance, if any, of ever turning back.

  52. kathib says:

This seems to be a familiar story.

Weren't the Marines in Mogadishu ordered to 'cut and run' by Pres Clinton?

Wasn't that action the one that signaled to Usama bin Laden that the United States lacked the resolve to stand and fight.

Wasn't it also the action which encouraged Al Quaeda to attack on 9/11/2001?

Who was it who said 'those who do not know/understand history are bound to repeat it'?

I'm retired Navy and from what I remember, USNS is civilian manned for the most part. They may not have had anything to fight back with. My solution would be to set up a merchant vessel with covert weapons platforms, Seal Team security, etc. Cruise around Somalia in "dumb mode with the Hijack Me Flag flying" until the pirates show up then open up with the weapons. Turn the pirates into shark bait and the skiff into a smoking pit in the water!

And now you know the truth…

      > BHO = Barrack H Obama
      > NSWC=Navy Special Warfare Command
      > ROE=Rules of Engagement
      > RIB=Ridged Inflatable Boat
      > OSC=On Scene Commander
      > CPN=is probably the Captain of the Bainbridge
      > CDR=Commander
      > OpArea= Operations Area

Having spoken to some SEALS yesterday and
asking why this thing dragged out for 4 days, I got the following:

      1. BHO wouldn't authorize the NSWC SEAL
teams to the scene for 36 hours going against OSC (on scene commander)
      recommendation.
      2. Once they arrived, BHO imposed restrictions
on their ROE that they couldn't do anything unless the hostage's life
      was in "imminent" danger
      3. The first time the hostage jumped, the SEALS
had the raggies all sighted in, but could not fire due to ROE
      restriction
      4. When the navy RIB came under fire as it
approached with supplies, no fire was returned due to ROE restrictions.
As the raggies were shooting at the RIB, they were exposed and the SEALS
      had them all dialed in.
      5. BHO specifically denied two rescue plans
developed by the Bainbridge CPN and SEAL teams
      6. Bainbridge CPN and SEAL team CDR finally
decide they have the OpArea and OSC authority to solely determine risk
to hostage. 4 hours later, 3 dead raggies
      7. BHO immediately claims credit for his
"daring and decisive" behaviour. As usual with him, it's BS.

Philips' first leap into the warm, dark water of the Indian Ocean hadn't
worked out as well. With the Bainbridge in range and a rescue by his
country's Navy possible, Philips threw himself off of his lifeboat
prison, enabling Navy shooters onboard the destroyer a clear shot at his
captors – and none was taken.

The guidance from National Command Authority – the president of the
      United States,
Barack Obama – had been clear: a peaceful solution was the only
acceptable outcome to this standoff unless the hostage's life was in
      clear, extreme danger.

The next day, a small Navy boat approaching the floating raft was fired
on by the Somali pirates – and again no fire was returned and no pirates
killed. This was again due to the cautious stance assumed by Navy
personnel thanks to the combination of a lack of clear guidance from
Washington and a mandate from the commander in chief's staff not to act
until Obama, a man with no background of dealing with such issues and no
track record of decisiveness, decided that any outcome other than a
      "peaceful solution" would be acceptable.

After taking fire from the Somali kidnappers again Saturday night, the
onscenecommander decided he'd had enough. Keeping his authority to act
in the case of a clear and present danger to the hostage's life and
having heard nothing from Washington since yet another request to mount
a rescue operation had been denied the day before, the Navy officer –
unnamed in all media reports to date – decided the AK47 one captor had
leveled at Philips' back was a threat to the hostage's life and ordered
the NSWC team to take their shots. 3 rounds downrange later, all three
brigands became enemy KIA and Philips was safe.

There is upside, downside, and spinside to the series of events over the
last week that culminated in the rescue of an
American hostage. Almost immediately following word of the rescue, the
Obama administration and its supporters claimed victory against pirates
in the Indian Ocean and declared an end to the
      standoff

Despite the Obama administration's (and its sycophants')
attempt to spin success as a result of bold, decisive
leadership by the inexperienced president, the reality is nothing of the
sort. What should have been a standoff lasting only hours – as long as
it took the USS Bainbridge and its team of NSWC operators to steam to
the location – became an embarrassing four day and counting
standoff between a ragtag handful of criminals with rifles and a U.S.
      Navy warship.

      From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

United States Naval Ship or USNS is the prefix designation given to non-commissioned ships of the United States Navy. These are usually auxiliary support vessels owned by the US Navy and operated by Military Sealift Command that are in service and crewed by civilians rather than Navy personnel. In comparison, US Navy ships commissioned into service have the designation USS and are crewed by US Navy personnel.[1]

That would just make people around the world hate us, it's time to play nice now bill, I thank we should spend some tax dollar's and build them a new pirate ship, then they will thank wow the U.S. is cool, and leave us alone. Now dosent that make more sense?

You know, since the Second World War, that is exactly what has slowly but surely corroded our Elite Fighting Forces. At one time it was, hit them back twice as hard as they hit you, make them think about wanting any more!! Now it's so complicated I think our Soldiers are at a continual risk of being killed before they can engage the enemy!! I'm not saying you don't know that TODIEFOR, I'm sure you do!! That's just my opinion.

  56. RobertCA says:

WOW , what a great strategy to over take the Pirates , RUN as fast as you can RUN , I would understand that , if it was a commercial ship , but the NAVY ???????????????????????? & the Pirates shot @ the NAVY ??????????????? & the NAVY kept running AWAY ????????????????
is this your new strategy of engagement with the pirates Mr Obama ?????????????
OOPS my bad , I forgot that you dont wanna upset your NATIVE NEIGHBORS after all KENYA has a long border with SOMALIA , now that we've got the facts right , I'm so happy that the NAVY didnt open any fire on the pirates , cause I'm 100% sure you will release their pics & prosecute our NAVY cause they were DEFENDING themselves .
Oh & one more thing Mr Obama , will you appear on tv tomorrow & apologise to the Somali pirates for not being able to capture our NAVY ship & tell the American people that when the Somali pirates started their activities , you were just 3 years old & that you cant do anything about that , after all who wants to blame a 3 year old for the pirates activities .

  57. NewtonW says:

It was a Naval Fleet Auxiliary Force ship- most of the crew are civilians. I'm assuming other than light arms, it was defenseless.

Otherwise I agree completely. I've already dented the drywall near my computer.

    • knutjb says:

Concur, when confronted by Somali pirate aggression, running does not fix it, talking only encourages more aggression. Pulling out the weapons and destroying the aggressors is the only way to encourage them to change their ways. Only when you understand what and how they believe can you stop the problem. You cannot apply your cultural paradigm to them. The Somali pirates are extreme Islamists and function in a Medieval mindset and only superior power will work. The WH doesn't understand this and wants to talk about it.

Come to think of it that is the very same ideal that Jimmy Carter used when cutting the Shaw of Iran off at the knees and enabling the radical arm of Islam Iran to take over the country. After a long hesitation of months Carter ok'd a less than desirable plan to rescue that failed because he had so severely weakened the military, further emboldening the extremist, a price we are still paying today. I believe if Carter had immediately sent the military straight to the embassy the moment it was overrun we would not have the such a severe problem with Islamic extremists. Hmmm…. History repeating itself there and in Pakistan too, just ask Musharraf.

#1- This, coming from a CNN news brief..? Already it's mired in "See how our 'Kinder, Gentler' Navy can prevent attacks by speeding up?" BS.

#2- Since I'm unable to find a manifest for what was on-board, most likely it was valuable enough- and the ship fortified well beyond what the pirates would have had- that it was prudent to simply ignore the bilge rats like an elephant ignores gnats…

#3- I would have to agree with one writer- it's like a dog chasing a car; if it caught the car it'd sit on its haunches with no idea what to do with it.

#4- With the exception of small arms & light munitions on the part of the pirates, they most likely don't have the firepower to take on even this vessel & there's no mooring platforms that would allow the pirates to board the ship readily… Given the design of the L&C, my guess is that the Marines on-board could pick their targets from the mid-ship crook block or from the near-aft structure long before the pirates could get so much as a plank to cross the ships' divide. Think Sgt York and the turkey shootin' contest…

#5- I honestly see this as "You're so insignificant we're going to ignore you now…A moniker such as "Fast Pirates" is like saying "Slow Children at Play" in the playground of the ocean.

    RusS out.

I would be willing to bet my next paycheck that the captain of that ship would have LOVED to have the opportunity to blow those pirates out of the water. I'm sure he had standing orders to avoid conflict and use force only as a last resort, and I'm sure he was quite frustrated by it.

Oh I forgot, they are under privilege and its all America's fault, let's buy them off while America goes broke. Hey BH0, relatives of yours? Time for a family reunion?

  65. detestObama says:

I agree with Romanofzki. Why not blow them out of the water. Now they will try it again! This does not make sense, but maybe with Obama's new softer policy, our ship should have given up. That way, the Somolian pirates could build up self esteem, and reasurance that they can hijack ships!

  66. FreeFlight says:

I would be willing to bet that there are many Navy SEALs that could have at least put a round or two into their boat at two miles. Slam dunk that they could have taken out several of them at only one mile.

The ship was unarmed for the most part. It was a support vessel carrying ammo and such. They just sped up to get away.

All I really want to do is taunt the pirates with "Run, run as fast as you can. You can't catch me, I'm the gingerbread man!" Too bad it's lost on them. Guess I'll just have to settle for blowing them out of the water.

On a more serious note, please explain to me why we even tolerate this? I'd just like to march in, kick some ass, eliminate them permanently, than GO HOME! Seems pretty simple to me. Honestly, am I missing something with this strategy. (Note, please ignore the spinelessness of the current administration. I am simply wanted to know if my strategy could use some refining.)

  75. bamaboy says:

I agree the Navy should have run the pirates down.I think picking them up after you sink their boat is not wise. They will end up in a prison here inthe U.S and we have to feed them.We have no leadership in this country to secure the people of this country. We should go in their country and beat the hell out of them.I hate to think of our navy running from anyone. That is Obama's policy which is a disgrace.

    • Fenderdave says:

I agree completely. Isn't that the rules of engagement in this case? It's not like that pirates had cap guns. If someone fired on any other branch of the military they would have been shot without question. I don't see the reasoning in this.

      • vulture09 says:

        Exactly.

I can't see the point of the non-lethal deterrent devices being put in on civilian ships- arm the crew with real guns, and start reducing the pirate population. I realize this may be quite a hassle as far as ports and what not, but it would make sense. Telling them 'No" isn't going to stop "pirates" anytime soon.
