Pirates captured an Italian-flagged tugboat with 16 crew including 10 Italians on Saturday, in the latest hijacking in the busy Gulf of Aden.

It makes no sense to me that all the ships are not armed, insurance be damned, let some pirates attempt to take over a ship and it would only take once or twice of all the pirates being shot and this craziness would end. Oh, but the shipping companies have so much cash they just keep dumping it on them. Wonder if they are in line for a bail out?

The Italian Prime Minister has asked for the US to help them recover their tugboat and crew. Since this president is all for holding hands with the international community, why isn't Hillary or Obama commenting on this? At least a one lined sentence that they are considering it. My worry is that anything that requires the use of guns will always deter Obama from engaging, after all, he could have probably talked sense to Hitler. And for those idiots here who think that pirates with AK47s aren't terrorists and don't know that a branch of Al Qaeda is already in Somalia, then how in the world could a policeman solve this? They can't; only the military can.
The terrorists in a boat are not unlike the Barbary Coast terrorists in the early 1800s that Jefferson had to face down alone (save a little help from the Swedes). Private corporations that choose that shipping route need to take responsibility for better security and the countries they are from need to band together and enforce the law in these waters.
It was widely reported these “terrorists” not pirates made $30 million last year!
Shall we check to see if they contribute to the coffers of the U.N., that is exactly where their protection has been established.
Hope the Italian leaders follow the lead of France and the U.S.A., and take back the ship and crew. No more $$$$$$ for these acts!
You know it's interesting. The one area where the government is supposed to be, defense, you want to let the private sector take care of it. But, I bet your all for the government doing all the things it's not supposed to do like, health care, welfare, retirement, and anything else that "can't be allowed to fail"!

Now that Capt. Phillips is free, time to take some long overdue action against the pirates. I think we need some payback for Mogadishu, anyway. Anyone remember the scene in Apocalypse Now? "I love the smell of napalm in the morning. Smells like … victory."
This is getting utterly ridiculous to say the least. We are obviously not going to do anything militarily with the pacifist we have in the White House. The fear I think would be to civilians, but the terrorists wouldn't be to blame for bringing down the wrath of the U.S. it would be our fault for letting the bombs fly. I am so disgusted!!
Where is our President? Why isn't he doing a press release keeping us informed? Isn't this important enough for our President, Nancy, Harry or the rest our Government Employees who call themselves "lawmakers". We need to call them what they really are Govenment Employees. These insurance companies have made this problem by paying these terrorist. We have to set up a system to load SEAL teams on these ships before they get to the danger zone and then off load them after they are clear. Then we need blow the crap out of anyone who tries to get near these ships no phone calls for authorization just open fire and let the SEAL's do what SEAL's do. Problem solved!

Watman: I find it frightening that there are actual real people in America who think that people who carry bombs and AK47s in a lifeboat and kidnap and threaten to kill American civilians if money isn't paid, shouldn't be harmed and should be given civil rights, like comrad obama here wants. I am now of the decision that there are actual American people who think any person, however evil, should be given a kiss on the cheek (whatever cheek you want), and be allowed to be treated humanely. I'm not of that thinking, we should actually kill all of them.
I will never understand this empathy for bad people, but yet tax and take from the good people and try to force us into socialized programs. This is why their argument is underwater and the more they promote this, then they can be assured that this President is finished. We can undo four years of the worst policies we have ever encountered, but boy, it's gonna be a real mess for the next President. Obama is crying "foul" with what he inherited, wait until the next president comes into office.

This may come off as callous or uncaring, but while I agree that our Navy should take out the pirates holding an American citizen, the US should not bear the burden of being an international police force. Since this is an Italian boat, the Italian military, which the article states is moving in to confront the pirates, has to take the lead in dealing with this situation.
Now, if other countries were to ask for our assistance in dealing with the pirate situation, then by all means we should go in with guns blazing, so to speak. However, our primary concern should be for our own citizens and property and it is to that end tha twe should be focusing our protection and might. Let every other country experiencing this problem deal with it in the manner of their own choosing.
What about lawless disregard of human life for monetary gain does the UN not understand and why aren't they fixing this problem that has become an international one?

You all realize that our new administration has no desire to have a military don't you? I listened to him for the year he was on the sentate floor. He believes he should have a militia, no armed citizens, no armed military, just his group of thugs to carry out his will. He doesn't think having states is a good idea either. We could spare the cost of having govenors, state senators and reps. from the tax payers. I can't believe people don't see where this is heading. I am heart sick that our country is slipping out of our hands and into a dictatorship. I only pray people see this before it's to late.
I hate to state the obvious here, but the insurance companies will not allow armed guards on the vessels because of liability issues… In other words they don't want to pay off on any claims brought by injured pirates…. I mean injured Oceanic Economic Research Personnel…
If that is how the Insurance Companies feel, then they should have to put one of their CEO's on each ship they insure. That way we will not pay higher prices as we can trade one of the CEO's to the Ter rorist and let the Stockholders pay the Ransom, or not.
With no strong force in the world, anyone to show bullies that they can't have what they want just because they want it, then the only route they end up going is overblown. They grow arrogant, idealistic, 10 ft. tall and bulletproof.
They have to be dealt with like difficult children, before they are dangerous adults that can perfect (or at least buy) nukes. Right now, it seems that no one can get in their way, so what do they have to lose? It's really very scary.
To me, the solution to this entire mess is to blockade the ports of that region of the world, surveil for small craft and blow them out of the water, explain to the Saudis that this is not how business will be done in the future, ransoms, kidnappings, murders etc. Let Somalia practice genocide on each other and then when they finally begin to listen, then occupy them. Occupy them for the long run, not the short run. Guide their ability to chose their own leaders who will keep the riff raff from playing Robin Hood.
Obviously allowing armed guards to stand post 24/7 with binoculars and night vision would certainly have a deterent effect if not eliminating altogether the piracy threat in international waters. Why havent our legistlators been screaming about the need to push the state department to change the international laws allowing this? Why havent they been screaming as loudly for arming our shipping companies as they screamed about AIG????? Oh yeah, that goes to support the argument for an armed citizenry and counter to the Statist's next attack.
They'll do that when they can figure out how to get the Somali Prates' votes…………….maybe absentee ballots!
