This doesn't surprise me at all, this is just another example that shows the AMERICAN people are fed up with our gov't. The kettle is starting to boil if you ask me.When it boils over is my question to the AMERICAN people???????

  2. Mugwump says:

And there stood a wigga whose trigga was longer than the proboscus of an elephant or the wonga of a whale…

    Grapes of Wrath…

  3. Hedman says:

"By law, local money may not resemble federal bills or be promoted as legal tender of the United States, says Claudia Dickens of the Bureau of Engraving and Printing.

"We print the real thing," she says."

The real thing huh? You mean the greenbacks that are worthless and less everyday because our Omnipotent, Omniscience Government has spent us into a hole that would have bankrupt any individual or corporation a few times over? The real thing worthless and less everyday because our Omnipotent and and Omniscience Government prints legal tender like it is going out of style, with absolutely nothing backing as being worth anything? It is probably worthless then the ink and cotton used in the presses.

Yeah thats "the real thing" I want in my pocket…a shared idea (lie) being run into the ground by greedy over zealous progressive (fascist) leaders…

  4. Speaking of money…
Just saw Obama self-praising because the Small Business Administration loans are up 20%, proof that the economy is rebounding and "the money" is getting out there; so now businesses can make payrolls, etc.

This President we have really IS an unmitigated IDIOT; since when does a business BORROW MONEY TO MAKE PAYROLL???? THAT'S NOT GOOD BUSINESS, BUT GETTING FURTHER IN DEBT TRYING TO PROP UP AN UNPROFITABLE VENTURE!!!! (Hey Mr. Prez, your lack of business savvy is showing!)

It is really past time to slide the kid wearing the helmet out of the driver's seat (yeah, it was cute while it lasted, but we're no longer on the back roads where it was safe to "practice") and get the adults back driving this bus –

The Tea Parties are our continuing adequate notices to our "representatives" that they should probably be submitting resumes to monster.com pronto – bet nobody stateside hires them…

    • Hedman says:

Maybe we should outsource our politicians…?
that seems to solve all the corporate problems, and they always make money. Corporations are never in the red or abusive to their slaves…hmm what oh sorry. their Employees…

    • detestObama says:

You talking about the Tea Parties. Did you know that there is a radical left wing group called "Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now", or "ACORN", that will be holding counter riots against our Tea Parties, in most of the same locations!
This is the same ACORN group that is 100% for Obama, and his Cronies, and were found guilty of fraudulently making up hundreds of thousands of bogus signups of voters that were dead! This is the same group that Obama has given $Billions though the Stimulus and the Omnibus bills!

  5. newshound77 says:

I was wondering if perhaps that might be something we could do as 912er's?

What if we printed '912 bucks' or something similar that could be used at businesses who subscribed to the Principles and Values and had signs posted that they would accept the 'bucks' as payment. It would help the businesses by directing more business to them and it would help the consumers to know they would be dealing with someone who is ethical and supports our cause.

Essentially it would be a lot like bartering, or as you said – gift certificates. I don't think it would be a problem unless you tried to pay your taxes with them or use them at places that didn't have a sign saying that they accept them. It's kind of like the chamber of commerce coupons and discount cards thing.

  6. AHSadler says:

This is basically a gift certificate, and not technically illegal…but if they were using their own currency, why should that be illegal? Can anyone point out how it hurts other people to trade something of value to someone else who wants it, in return for a good or service? Even if the thing being traded isn't one of those nice pieces of paper the government pulls out of thin air?

  7. Oldbikefixer says:

I've always been a proponent of small business, and I see this as a good thing. However, someone who knows tax law needs to think of a way that this system can be used to help the small businesses that benefit from this system get away from having to pay the federal businness taxes that they're straddled with.

  8. WeimeeLady says:

Well, after giving this some thought, (as oppossed to considerable thought), I think that this will be a means to give "like minded people" a way to UNITE and STAND TOGETHER with a common purpose. We all have a prima facia duty to do the following: Take care ouf ourselves first, our family second, our neighbors third, our community fourth, our state fifth, …. and on down the line. This brings people together in our own hometowns, Small Town America, isn't that where we need to start? Don't we start by getting to know our neighbors and local businessess? Isn't this where we will find people like us who stand up for Freedom and Good Old American Enginuity and Plain Old Common Sence? Come On Guys, Let's get a plan… , but we've got to start out in our own back yards !!!!!!!!!!!!
I say, No more bickering….. The ship is sinking, and quite frankly, I don't see that we have a hell of alot of time!!!!!!!!!!!! Please 9-12er's Let's Roll !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!. We've simply got to think of something that MAY, in a peaceful manner, work to send the message that we are not going to take it anymore.

  9. CyberVirus says:

IF we could just return to the gold standard it would be a step in the right direction…..BUT it looks like these morons that are running things now want to go into a world economic system………one that I WILL NOT participate in.

  10. Thorgo says:

As long as they can tax it , it won't make a damn bit of difference to them.

  11. Nomarxism says:

Speaking of currency, many of you probably remember the debate that went on some time ago regarding the Amero. Of course there was denial from the government that there was any plan to replace the dollar with this new North American Union currency and doing away with the Mexican Peso and the US and Canadian Dollar. The idea was to implement that new currency in 2010 after deliberately destroying the US dollar. Crazy conspiracy theorists.

    • PBrenda says:

Mexico is near collapse, thus their peso……our dollar will be worth nothing……last night, on Fox, they said that our government is down 25% in revenue taken in…..hmmm…..no wonder as people are not spending their money…..businesses going under (another source of revenue through taxes). Actually, I would guess that number to be higher than the government is reporting. I put nothing past this regime and whatever they can do TO our country in order to destroy it. But we need to continue calling our "elected officials" and protests. If we continue to grow in NUMBERS, that is what they will listen to.

  12. Nomarxism says:

Interesting….I wonder how is benefited the locals versus the government.

  13. Vvajk says:

I'm not an expert on the economy by any means, but on the surface this seems like a good idea to me. I don't think that alone this will make a huge impact or solve the problems we face, but I don't believe there is one big idea that is going to pull us out of this decline. It's going to be the culmination of lots of good ideas like this that eventually save the economy. Just my opinion. More power to the Scrip! Maybe here in Idaho we can have the $pud. = )

  14. blondes says:

Repeal the 16th amendment and get the FairTax, HR25, passed, put the power back to the people, let us pay taxes as we spend, let everyone get their full paycheck, learn more by checking out Fairtax.org. Glen Beck does a fine job on his show, puts it all right in our face.!!!

  15. This is actually a really good idea, it jump starts the economy for the community and keeps money within the company and not in China.

  16. indiana912 says:

This is just like going to the fair and buying ride tickets. Thay take the place of money but spend the same. Sounds OK to me. Here is a thought, how about everyone goes out and supports your local mom & pop places. Keep your money in you local towns and cities this will help the town and the people in it. I love my country, but without my town I have noplace to live. I am not saying I dont spend money at my local WAL-MART or big chain, but I will pay just a little more at a local store to keep local familes and friends in a job.

  17. Only 53% of Americans Say Capitalism is Better Than Socialism. Notice the distinction when the question is asked about "free markets" as compared to "capitalism." Misinformed Americans?

    • AHSadler says:

Deliberately misinformed–socialist-minded government schools have spent decades making as many people as possible facile government servants who think that the government's job is not to protect our rights but to "help everyone out." So socialism is seen as "fairness" or "helping the oppressed," rather than the greatest instrument of oppression ever created.

  18. CatskillPhil says:

Nothing but a genuine attempt to keep local money spent at local businesses. Nothing to be concerned with, this is noting new and has been done for a while in communities across the country. It isn’t really money (not that the greenback really is either anymore) just a voucher good where accepted.

  19. 56coop says:

I certainly do not see any reason for excitement here. As many have said, it is simply a form of a gift certificate or coupon. I personally think what is brilliant about it is it encourages people to buy locally. Small businesses have been the backbone of this country for years. I could stand on a soapbox & talk for hours about the evils of Wal-Mart. They have done just as much to ruin small businesses (if not more) as the government has. I don't know, maybe you like antifreeze in your toothpaste or melamine in your baby formula. Every dollar you spend locally helps your local economy thrive. Every dollar you spend at Wal-Mart allows some Chinese worker to continue to work for 35 cents a day. As an owner of a small business that is hanging on by very short fingernails I encourage you all to shop locally. Everything about it makes sense. I've said it many times on this site, if you are shoppping at Wal-Mart, or any big box store for that matter, and not giving your locally owned businesses a chance to earn your business then you might be talking the talk here, but you are not walking the walk.

  20. 912fan says:

If this is what the people want to do great! To me it doesn't sound much different than just buying a gift certificate at a discount… What's illegal about that?
At Christmas time many companies give you a gift card when you purchase one (basically a discount).

I think it is extreme to say they are breaking the law, I think people shouldn't be calling this "local currency" Just call it a chamber of commerce gift certificate (but at a discount)… If that was the case would there be any uproar?

    • USMCiNGEN says:

By definitition these local currencies are, in fact, currency. I don't know enough of the case law surrounding legal tender laws to speculate about the legality of its use. I suspect, however, that if avoided making it directly redeemable in dollars, and avoided describing its value in dollars you could get away with it. I bet if you got a precious metals merchant to accept a local or regional currency it might develop some staying power.

      • 912fan says:

I know it is being called currency, but it is only accepted at limited outlets. Therefore it is more like a certificate, so i don't know why people don't just sell them as a certificate, this would avoid any legal problems. I believe it is restaurant.com that you can can get buy a certificate for 1/2 off or to a participating restaurant.
Same concept. To me this is no big deal, i think it is great for those communities that want to do it. I don't think it could hurt the value of the dollar, congress does a pretty good job at that! (Bailout, bailout, bailout, Etc.)

  21. fstwrtr says:

God forbid this things gets out of hand and spreads, thus directly competing with the corupt and inflated dollar. We wouldnt want a new monetary system that actually WORKED would we? These towns and cities should be trading their money for gold and not Dollars, get back to where we should be.

    • USMCiNGEN says:

Gold has its own problems. A hard money currency is clearly superior to a fiat currency. And while gold is and was superior in its effect upon the preservation of the liberties of a free people, it protects them most from corruption in government and banks. It is inferior to a dynamic currency in its protection against common criminals.

A multi-metal standard or a economitrically dynamic currency may offer greater benefit than any other.

  22. donttrod says:

Well I hope these people make it work for them, they are desperate. The federal gov. is so corrupt now, and they are only worried about their agenda, they don't give a crap. I truly think this government hates the people, and the American Way.

  23. Marylou says:

There is a charity in Fl that pays their residents with play money for chores to teach them responsibility. At the time I owned a clothing store and allowed them to purchase items from my store using the funny money. Of course I used the money to keep track of my contribution to this particular charity. However, this is total different from a real local currency. It seems to me that there should be a way for people to help one another on a local level though without money exchange. Maybe goods for goods – swap meets, etc.

    • USMCiNGEN says:

These currencies work best when the bank makes the local currency redeemable. Unfortunately they rarely do. As long as the dollars paid in go on deposit in the bank performing the exchange I bet the Federal Reserve leaves them alone.

  24. Legal issues aside, "as the fed doesn't play by the rules anyways." I say lets have the local governments print money. In exchange for the cash we'd give them gold. So $95 worth of gold, $100 in local cash. Then when we want to cash in we get gold back. This would be a real value and it would help set back any plans for a global currency.

  25. When I start choosing other things like You Tube over Glenn Becks show I know he has gotten off track. Notice I am on the web right now. I suppose there may be a few of his shows archived in my DVR I may or may not scan through…….

    • The same people that proved "9/11 inside job" conspiracy-theory to be false (Popular Mechanics)
has also proved this to be a hoax. Don't wast your time. Beck showed it on FNC.

      • You've been conned and lied to.. Everything listed above is absolutely real, it's all documented. The denial has to stop. My God, you people are incredible. You guys really expect FOX News to bring you the absolute truth about what the Military Industrial Complex is up to? My God, we really are in trouble. You'll find out in time, and it's not gonna be pretty. Stop being naive, or we really have no hope at all in this nation..

"A nation of sheep will beget a government of wolves" – Edward R. Murrow

    • Deborah_W says:

I've read a bunch on the conspiracy theory dating back to the early 90's and some of the above is a bit scary but we are armed and it will be difficult for them to do anything drastic because we make up a lot of the population. I am not intimidated or afraid of the far left because just like our founding fathers, give me liberty or give me death. God is in Control and don't loose focus on the goal with distractions such as the conspiracy theories because it doesn't matter. Obviously those who believe in World Governments and "Fairness" among nations have been planning our demise since the days of our founding, there is nothing new under the sun my friend and your time can be spent studying far more important subjects right now.

    • What does this have to do with communities printing coupons?

  26. mattpileggi says:

The Constitution prohibits the States from printing their own currency, but this is more akin to getting tokens at an arcade or subway. You are essentially purchasing a token or coupon that some local stores have decided to accept. The main downside of this would be the cost of the effort maintaining the system and also the introduction of fraud (we've spent so much money already trying to prevent fraud of federal reserve notes). By the way, Congress has long since given away their power to coin money and regulate the value thereof with the passage of the Federal Reserve Act.
