It means your food was irradiated!

I appreciate your reply. I checked out the website you gave me, guess what? This is the group that John Stossel talks about in his book "Myths, Lies, and Downright Stupidity". He says the founder is Dr. Walter Burnstein, an osteopath with a family practice in New Jersy, he's not even a research scientist. He even misconstrues research that has been done.

You should get a copy of this book, it has many interesting facts and very entertaing to read. We all need to be better informed, because an informed public is dangerous to those in power. (i'm sure that must have been said by someone famous) Hoping to chat again.

Hey spinhouse247, great comment. Cooking with someone you love (assuming you love your fiance, just kidding, I'm a Glenn Beck fan too.) can be relaxing and a great way to spend time together.

What caught my mind about your comment is the chicken breast thing you wrote about. (Mental note: preposition at the end of a sentece…sentence.) I've never used steroids spinhouse247, but I've got veins allover the OUTSIDE of my body between my skin and the rest of my body. Is this somehow oppositely bad of having veins allover the inside of my muscles? I used to be a big time runner and generally in great cardiovascular shape and people admired the veins visible between my skin and the rest of my body. Those people would tell me about what a great cardiovascular system I possessed. It was embarrassing. I used to tan to try to hide them but those veins would not go away. I quit running and exercising and that didn't work either. They are still there, those pesky veins and they remain visible even though I'm 46 yrs. old now. Damn, I'm older than Glenn…..but I still love him.

    Anyway, I'm covered with veins, but I don't think I'm tasteless….am I?

    • spinhouse247 says:

You do bring an excellent point to the table. I'm a tall and athletic build with a good amount of veins as well (perhaps not as many as you ;) ). So as an answer, no; a bunch of bulging veins doesn't mean you are using steroids. I'll be totally honest, I used them years ago during high school as A-Rod would call the "loosey goosey" years. Yes I regret it but it did cause me to grow much more mass and frankly I don't think I'd have the protruding veins I have to this day. I know people that have the same build I currently have that are really into cardio that have tons of veins. Since I'm not a doctor I don't know the exact reason for this but I'd figure for cardio buffs its higher blood pressure and for roid freaks its adrenaline leading to higher blood pressure but I could be wrong…

Back to the chicken thing. If the chicken isn't out running around the range all day its not getting all jacked up and veiny couped up in a cage is it?

As for the way you taste? Um, well that's just questionable. Try burning some hair and see if that produces a smell worthy of eating. If so then, well… Have fun with that man!

  3. acheyjake says:

Hey dw04, how are you doing? Sorry friend, worry about crops after a nuclear war? How big of a nuclear war? Small, medium, or large? Depending on the size of the nuclear war and the prevailing winds that carry the fallout in whatever direction and how much land area and water is contaminated, there may not be farmers to grow crops or harvest them or people to eat those crops if they are harvested. This is what I mean by the difference between being exposed to radioactive material and being contaminated with radioactive material. This is where the left has so many confused on the nuclear issue.

I'll break it down into basic terms. If I go to the doctor and get an X-ray, I am not radioactive when I leave the
doctor's office nor is the X-ray machine if it is turned off. If I screw up at work and expose myself to the radioactivity of Co-60 and then remove myself from the presence of said Co-60, most likely injured yes, but I am not radioactive. However, if I somehow manage to perform an act of supreme idiocy and actually contaminate myself with Co-60, I'm toast, in a radioactive sense, because I am now radioactive due to the radioactive material I am contaminated with and people around me might be in jeopardy. This is why I have the knowledge I have and the respect I have for all things radioactive.

I mentioned to you in a previous post that the difference between myself and the food I consume is that my cells are still reproducing and those cells of the food I consume are no longer reproducing. I was hoping for a challenge on that one dw04. You know, the whole cell mutation thing.

One last thing for now dw04, if we start talking about the differences between ionizing and non-ionizing radiation, peoples eyes will glaze over.

    Take care, friend.

    • dw04 says:

Good call on the cells not mutating in the food because they are reproducing. Never really though about that, they can't mutate if they are already dead! Thanks for the info.

  4. EmmBee says:

ACHEYJAKE, I couldn't post a reply, but thank you for your comments. I agree with what you are saying. This is a not all about our food, but about everything that the government touches…at least lately. I've never put the "vote with dollars" idea into persepctive, but you are right. I do actually choose where I shop based on ideals and service. For example, I choose to shop at a small local grocery store because I know my money is supporting the local economy and business owners in my very small town. In return, they help me get my groceries to the car and will order anything I ask for. I work in a much larger city and could easily shop there, but I would rather have less of a selection and support the greater cause. Thank you again for helping me put it into perspective.

    • acheyjake says:

Hey EmmBee, great point. We vote with our dollars not only for large corporations but small business as well. I make it a point in my daily purchases to have a mix between not only small and big business, but I mix it up between all businesses, even those who provide similar products in my effort to retain freedom of choice when it comes to products and do the best I can to prevent monopolies. In other words, one day I might buy a 7-up, the next day a Sprite, and the next a Sierra Mist. I follow that up with one of the smaller regional brands just to keep everybody on their toes. (I used those examples because caffeine is not my friend.) I do this with grocery buying as well. Once again, great point EmmBee.

Your point also prompted a follow-up thought from my previous comment. We not only vote with our dollars to choose which companies are profitable and stay in business, we also vote with our dollars to choose which companies in which we invest. Ugh!!!!! Until last fall anyway…..

The government, under our so called leadership, is making those decisions for us now. Or at least the government is attempting to make those decisions for us.

I have one last thought. I realize my grammar is not perfect and one characteristic of my grammar that I have noticed is a tendency to finish sentences with prepositions. I think I'm doing better and it is important to me because that is something I will not put up with.

      Am I right?

  5. acheyjake says:

This is a reply to EmmBee but my hope is that all who are following this thread will read and respond to it. One of the themes I see in this thread is "governmental control" or "controlled by the government". I find this very ironic in that we as a nation of Americans are currently giving complete control to the government and taking it away from those whose self interest is to do the right thing by the American people.

I shall illustrate my point. Many of us are concerned with government control and regulation yet it is "corporations and private businesses" that will fail if those corporations and private businesses do not serve us, the American people, in a way that encourages us to vote with our "dollars". We each get one vote each election yet we have many dollars to spend as a body from day to day, week to week, and year to year and those dollars we "vote" with determine which corporations or businesses succeed and which ones fail. WE THE PEOPLE decide who stays in business and is profitable, which companies succeed and those that fail. We vote with our dollars when it comes to business and where and how we spend our money. Wal-Mart and McDonald's anyone? Two companies that are booming right now. Why? We CHOOSE to do business with them because they SERVE us. They fulfill everyday needs and/or wants at very reasonable prices and they are profitable as a result. Perfect companies, no, but they SERVE us, the American people. If they don't serve us, they go out of business. If they do things that are unsafe, that can cause us harm, they go out of business because we will no longer "vote" for them with our dollars. If they sell irradiated food knowing that consuming that food will cause us harm, we will "vote" those companies out of business by not giving them our dollars. If corporations do things that don't serve us, Americans, by doing things that harm us, they're toast.

Contrast this with our current politicians in D.C. Who the hell are they SERVING?

They are sure as hell not serving us and the sad thing is, though we have one vote every election yet many dollars to "vote" with, our politicians are doing their best (worst?) to insure we have fewer and fewer dollars to "vote" with. Thus, it is now the government and our politicians who are seeking to decide which businesses fail and which ones succeed, not us.

    That is just not American

    Thanks for reading!

  6. EmmBee says:

Acheyjake, I'm not freaking out about the radiation in the food. If you had read my post, you will find that I didn't mention anything about the personal threat of radiation. I'll admit that I'm not totally informed, that is why I stated that I was researching it. My husband works in a nuclear plant. I work in the healthcare industry. I am far from ignorant regarding the effects of radiation or the lack thereof.

I apologize if my statements hacked you off; however, in regard to our personal rights, I feel that we should have a CHOICE as to how our food is treated. I know I don't have to buy it…for now. The nutritional deficiencies that have been reported are my major concern. The fact that a seemingly cute little symbol attached to the food is slipped in there with out much comment concerns me. I feel that it is the beginning of more to come….more that may not be as harmless.

  7. EricEttinger says:

But they will tax you on the fertilizer, seed, weedkiller etc.

  8. dw04 says:

You are right, if you do the research, during the cold war, there was always a worry that crops after nuclear war would yield significantly lower levels of necessary vitamins. For everyone else, is John Stossel god now, everyone bases their opinion on this book!

When food is irradiated, ionizing radiation reacts with water in the food, causing the release of electrons and the formation of highly reactive free radicals. The free radicals interact with vitamins in ways that can alter and degrade their structure and/or activity. Just a google search I made, anyway I thought free-radicals were bad.

Not to mention that the process is inherently dangerous. Lets store some cobalt-60 around so terrorists can get a hold of it! Just cook your dang food!

This symbol seems to me to be DECEPTIVELY "green".

    • mothernature says:

I totally agree with you! This not being the only symbol, or anything else for that matters, that's not deceptive. Granted, I'm not educated in radiography in any capacity, but I must question why it is deemed necessary to "DO" anything to our food but grow it as God had intended and eat it that way. The only reason I can see for doing anything to our food, is for some careless, thoughtless, greedy souls looking for a way to make a quick and easy buck, at our expense. If it ain't broke, why fix it?
As for bacteria, we need it to live! Another easy, quick buck to be made by over hyping how BAD germs are for you, so you simply MUST buy and use hand sanitizers! God forbid you might actually build up natural defenses! We have to put our natural defenses in a weakened state so we can take all the drugs being developed to live a good and happy life!
I simply can't wrap my mind around how gullible the public is. It's my opinion that the media is being highly irresponsible in their reporting. I can't trust very much of what they say. It's all geared on ratings… and yup, that all mighty dollar.

  10. Benny_P says:

I don't know why anyone would buy a chicken that looks like it was on steroids, or irradiated chicken. Now that my parents bought a microwave oven (not a microwave, a mini-oven; some poeple are so dumb these days and need an explanation for every single thing there is), I don't use the microwave. The microwave takes out most/all vitamins and nutrients, and makes food soggy and not crisp.

As for organic and unorganic, well, processed foods and all that other stuff is good in moderation. Organic costs more, but it's worth it, since my parents bought organic, I have been in much better health, and organic tastes better.

  11. spinhouse247 says:

I try to buy local produce and meat whenever it is available, if I can't I'll buy organic at the grocer. I'm not anymore scared of irradation than I am a microwave, then again I almost never use the microwave. Either way, I just try to eat natural foods with as little human additives as possible but this is growing harder each passing year with all these regulations. Sadly I believe this is because people have become so lazy that they don't even know how to cook a proper meal anymore. I think people need to go back to basics and learn to cook again. Each week I list 7 meals and ingredients to shop for. I cook large enough meals so I have leftovers the following day for lunch. Its very affordable to do this and I get to unwind after work by cooking a meal with my fiance and enjoying it together.

    Here's a simple experiment:

Go to the grocer and buy some organic chicken breasts then buy some of the cheap store brand breasts. Lay them next to each other and compare the two. At least where I live the store brand ones are larger and look like they've had more steroids than Barry Bonds, not only that they are filled with veins and quite tasteless.

  12. dw04 says:

Read this, I just don't think this is a good idea right now, Lets do some more research. In the mean time just cook your food!!!!!!!

    • acheyjake says:

Hey dw04, just responding to your response of my earlier post.

"Or maybe you let it sit because it is HOT! A microwave uses microwaves to excite molecules inside the food, they move around and cause friction which heats the food. It is non-ionizing, so it doesn't change the structure of the molecules."

True on all points; however, the wait time is to allow the activity of the microwaves and molecules to stop as well as allow the food to cool and even out in temperature.

""Anyone reading this ever heard of X-ray?" Anyone ever watch a doctor go behind a wall to take one, or have you wear a lead vest? Or tell you that you shouldn't get too many."

True again but X-rays are used safely daily and they benefit greatly the people who need them. The alternative to X-ray? Exploratory surgery. We do the same thing on the job. That is we use shielding and as much of it as possible while working.

""Do you people know that when you get a sun burn, it is a form of radiation burn?" UV radiation filtered through the atmosphere is allot different than CO-60 Gamma rays, don't you think?"

Yes, UV radiation is very different than Co-60, but it can kill you just the same. Melanoma anyone?

"So then if your story is true, why don't you go in the chamber with the food, get dosed, come out and tell us that you're alright!"

So what?? You want me to commit a slow, painful suicide? That is a ridiculous suggestion, don't you think? As far as I know, I haven't heard of any tomatoes mutating into big tomato monsters or even little tomato monsters that eat us from the inside out. Have you? If you have, email me the news story. My cells are still reproducing and radiation could cause them to mutate, a picked tomato's cells are no longer reproducing so the likelihood that they will mutate isn't there.

"You can find just as much info online for either side, I don't think enough study has been completed yet."

I agree dw04. Scientists can't differentiate the different causes of cancer currently. This is why they can't explain why some smokers never get lung cancer and some non-smokers do. We have a long way to go research wise. As a matter of fact, our researchers currently can't determine definitively the specific cause of any cancer that I'm aware of. They can only crunch numbers that show results like the high incidence of lung cancer in smokers so they conclude that smoking causes cancer. There is no difference in the lung cancer of a non-smokers and the lung cancer of smokers. It is still lung cancer. Also, did you know that radiation doesn't affect sperm cells but that it does affect the female reproductive organs?

"Either way, I'm in the Military and trained in NBC (Nuclear, Biological, and Chemical), I don't personally like the idea, if you do, then go ahead and buy it, but I will grow my own."

I am a former Marine dw04 and at one point I was my company's NBC NCO. I was trained to actually set up and manage NBC decontamination stations. Alpha Co. 1/6, 2nd Marine Division, 3rd Platoon, '83-'85.

"Also, acheyjake, ever learn about Madame Curie?"

Yes, dw04, Madame Curie was a pioneer in research concerning radioactivity and her and her husband died of leukemia, most likely due to their exposure to radiation. Tragic, considering how gifted they were. We've come a long way since then, wouldn't you agree?

Hey dw04, I've enjoyed the conversation and I thank you for your military service. Keep in mind dw04 that I understand we are still learning to understand radiation and radioactivity.

As far as growing my own? Fresh vegetables grown in your own garden the right way always taste better than commercial. I'm sure we can all agree on that.

  13. BigJohn12 says:

Thanks for the education. It amazes me how few people seem to understand what you are saying. I say we should have more irradiated food. Think about the convenience and cost savings of irradiated milk. No more refrigerated trucks to ship the milk to the store, no more coolers to keep it in. Once irradiated, you don't even have to keep it cool until it is opened. If people can ever get over the fear of the word, maybe they can begin to accept the value in it.

  14. acheylake, you are correct and must realize that there are some on here for conspiracy theories The main point glenn makes is to read and educate ourselves on the topics we discuss not make purely emotional verdicts like many did in this past election.I personaly buy my meats from local farms due to the fact they are all free range farms and no antibiotics or steroids, plus it helps support my local economy..God Bless America and our troops

  15. Minuteman79 says:

??? Confused…I guess I'll just keep growing my own food. At least until the government comes to my door to tell me how to garden…

  16. acheyjake says:

EmmBee, you are as ignorant as you can be on the issue of the irradiation of food. Irradiating food does not affect the food in any way and it does not affect the people or animals who consume the irradiated food. If the irradiation of food is harmful, I would be dead. EmmBee, you have no understanding of radiation and the sources of radiation that exist both naturally and man made.

I am an industrial radiographer with extensive training in the safe handling and use of radioactive materials such as Ir-192 and Co-60. I work with these materials daily. The first thing a person should understand is the difference between being exposed to radiation and actually being contaminated with radioactive material. They are two completely different things. If you are exposed to the radiation of a radioactive material, once you remove that material, there is no longer any radioactivity present. This is what they do with food. However, if you actually have the radioactive material present on your skin, clothes, or if you ingest it somehow, or if your environment is contaminated with radioactive material, that's a problem.

I find this topic pretty funny actually and here is why: How many of you own microwave ovens? HELLO! Microwave RADIATION! Most of you probably NUKE your food on a daily basis. It's a different type of radiation but it is still radiation. Why do you think the instructions on microwaveable foods always tell you to let the food stand for a few minutes in the microwave oven? It's to allow the radioactivity to stop.

Also, let's talk about Ultra Violet rays….HELLO again! Ultra Violet radiation…hhmmm. Our food can't grow with out sunlight. Sunlight contains UV rays or UV RADIATION. Again I know, a different type of radiation, but radiation just the same. Do you people know that when you get a sun burn, it is a form of radiation burn? Let me illustrate this. As a trained radiographer, I know that if I accidentally expose myself to an excessive dose of radiation from a source such as Ir-192 very close to my body, the radiation burns will not show up for hours or possibly even days depending on the dose received. Sound familiar? When you get a sun burn, you may not feel the full effects of it for hours or maybe even until the next day. That is why most people get sunburns in the first place, they don't realize they are being burned until it is too late.

Anyone reading this ever heard of X-ray? Again, a form of radiation used daily by humans. What? People being irradiated by radiologists in our hospitals and clinics??

WOW!!! Radiation all over the place. Freak out everybody!!!!!!

This whole thread is ridiculous. This is one of the things that hacks me off about the left. The left has everyone so freaked out about radiation and nuclear power that we can't build nuclear power plants. Do some research and you will discover that thousands have been killed throughout the history of coal mining and very few have been killed or have died from nuclear power in the United States. I bet many of you can't remember the last time someone was harmed by nuclear power in the United States. I challenge all of you to invest some time to learn more about nuclear power and radiation.

  17. YAK says:

I work in the feild of food safety, and I can see the benifits to irradiation. The bad thing is; the reason we're headed this route, is because people don't know how to cook and prepare food anymore! Too many people are getting sick from food that they under cooked or didn't wash or refridgerate properly. Instead of learning how to do it right, the brainless masses what a quick fix so they don't have to think! I think irradiation is fine, but it shouldn't be mandatory. Most people have been eating irradiated products for years without knowing it. Lot's of spices and seasonings are irradiated, but don't require the symbol. Some advances in food safety are good, but they're coming about for the wrong reasons. Before too long we'll all be eating out of toothpaste tubes because we can't be trusted to prepare our own foods.

  18. Zundfolge says:

If she's planting veggies she's not making policy statements and telling the American people how horrible they all are.

Its nothing more than keeping an embarrassing member of the administration safely away from the cameras without locking her in the basement.

  19. KhetaAmenti says:

Could you please cite your research for the irradiation sucking the vitamins out of food?
Antibiotics have lost their potency because of over use and patients not completeing the prescription. This caused the stronger bacteria that had not been killed to propagate and/or mutate. Newer antibiotics are needed to fight these mutations.
Skin conditiond from hand sanitizers more than likely are caused by high alcohol content.
Irradiation is not new, spices have been irradiated for over 20 years.
"Pasturization also met public skepticism when it was introduced." from John Stossel's "Myths, Lies, and Downright Stupidity"

    • EmmBee says:

KhetaAmenti, I see your point. Again, I'm not totally against irradiation; however, I don't think it is all positive. Probably the most explicit site I read regarding vitamin loss was on foodandwaterwatch.org. They weren't pounding on the irradiation as much as they were simply presenting facts. If you check it out, let me know what you think. I'm open-minded enough to look at all sides. I appreciate your constructive comments. I still will avoid the symbol as long as I have other food choices, but I don't think that it will poison me if I were to consume it. :-)

      • acheyjake says:

I apologize EmmBee. My response to you in this thread was harsh. My fault. I didn't mean to offend you by saying you were ignorant. But hey, what can I say? I'm a huge Glenn Beck fan!!!! I think I'll go cry now.
        :-) , acheyjake

Either way, I'm in the Military and trained in NBC (Nuclear, Biological, and Chemical), I don't personally like the idea, if you do, then go ahead and buy it, but I will grow my own.

Also, acheyjake, ever learn about Madame Curie?

  23. rsexteriors says:

Yeah and Frank and Dodd should be supervised by Geitner

  24. leasylvester says:

I could tell from that disgusted look on Michelle Obama's face that she'd rather be doing something, anything else besides holding that shovel….. LOL.

  25. AFVet says:

In order to be certified "Organic" wouldn't the White House lawn have to go for many years without "evil" fertilizers and pesticides? You'll not convince me that those "evil" chemicals haven't been used on the White House grounds as routine. As another poster pointed out, this is nothing but another empty gesture; a photo opportunity to show us how much First Lady Missy "cares" about children, the environment, the oft-mentioned "sustainability" (yeah, like that one garden patch is going to FEED the White House by itself), and any other points her handlers think she'll pick up.

  26. Northstar says:

Again don't overlook the big picture…….The food last longer …..And because most food today is processed by large companies it is beneficial for them ….It's all about (1) SHELF LIFE …..(2) removal of corporate risk from bacatrica…..(3)….O boy how much easier it will be to do any meat processing ……This has been coming for years …..

  27. This is a perfect example of why "our government" needs to change! This country is so far from it's roots that the expression " land of the free" no longer applies. We have the highest number of incarcerated citzens of any country in the world. Why is this? Because "we the people" do not take the time to look at the people we elect to run the country. These people all have their own agendas and they write the laws to suit themselves, and justify their position, so they will get re-elected. So we go on our merry way thinking about all the things we need do to better our lives and forget about our obligation to do the oversight on the very persons who effect our lives and freedoms the most. Stop and THINK about what your doing when you exercise your freedom to vote next election; or you may wake up one morning and that freedom may no longer exist.

  28. I think planting a garden is something all the 912'ers should do, if they are able.

  29. AlOmega says:

Whoa. Nasty Irradiated Foods. People who are against this also call that food, Frankenfood – as if Barney Frank(en) was involved. He isn't nor wouldn't be cause he's an EnvironMentalist (when the voting mood calls for it). Other people besides EnvironMentalists that are against this are the Royals in England. Isn't their IQ below 100? Doesn't that tell you something? My opinion: Pleeeeezzzze irradiate my foods cause that will make it safer. Not sure if this is done to all that peanut or peanut butter or whatever comes from places like Georga (Carter country) but it should be irradiated…

  30. FORTHEALMIGHTY says:

First off I am a proud American Vet. I did not serve over seas but i supported those who did, as an aircraft maintainer. I have solved all of our problems. In the 50’s we took God (our Creator) and all aspects of accountability out of our public schools. Slowly it has been taken out of our court rooms and even our homes. We have lost touch with the Liberty we came here for. God gave us this land and He will let it be taken away when we no longer respect Him. Too long have we hidden our faces. We must stand and be heard. Christ is alive and he is pissed. Beware the Wrath of God. His return is near.

  31. Are we suppose to report our personnal garden tomato's as taxable income now?

  32. auntbea117 says:

TODAY you won't be taxed on your garden and the fruits of your private labors but considering all the new "laws" I'd bet a dollar to a donut hole it won't take long for the government to figure out a way to tax our gardens – even the little tubs some of us use. If I am not mistaken, Watkins has been irradiating their dried spices for a long time. Seems to work because they are great. As seniors, we prefer irradiated milk because it lasts so much longer. Sometimes we go through a 1/2 gallon and sometimes it takes 2 weeks to go through a 1/2 gallon. At least in this instance it is a money saver for us. Properly done, home canned or frozen food is the best. The flavor can't be beat.

  33. dad0301 says:

if you put milk in an air tight container and irradiate it, it will last 10 years without spoiling at room temperature. Same thing with meat. Irradiating does the same thing as canning does, it kills all the bateria etc. The problem with canning is the high temperature destroys cell tissue and makes the food takes somewhat bland and mushy. Irradiating doesn't destroy the tissue so the food tastes better and last longer.

  34. H2SO4 says:

I think the point of symbol is it's cuteness doesn't inform the common consumer about it's real meaning. A simple message like "Irradiated for your safety" would give consumers an honest understanding to choose whether or not they want to buy the adultured product.

  35. In November of 2008, I saw that my retirement was going to "Tank'. So, I started planting fruit trees and pecan trees. They are easy to grow and will assist what little retirement I can get, with items I can eat, sell, or barter.

  36. I have a friend who works for Sears. He tells me that, you would not believe have many people are using charge cards to buy garden equipment. People are really concerned.

  37. H2SO4 says:

Grain or corn gluten is a animal feed byproduct of the alcohol making process, it isn't like all the food value disappears in the process.

  38. Krissy72 says:

Does this mean that we are now going to have to pay even more for our food because it has been irradiated? I'm still mad over the fact that I'm paying more for chicken because it is antibiotic free. I wasn't concerned about the antibiotics in the chicken to begin with, and now I have no choice but to pay more and by "antibiotic free" because the stores around here don't carry anything else.

  39. PaMom4Palin says:

I have grown our own food for 30 yrs…back then it was to have nice fresh veg and to can them for winter…to save money…now I grow more out of concern for safety…..

  40. HenchmanUSA says:

Irradiation may be necessary. Harmless, as far as we know, it will expand the food supply. Thus OBAMA can put more people on "food stamps". Indeed, if the food supply grows substantially, we can put farmers on "food stamps" and no one will have to work for worthless money. I think I have this Marxist thing down!

  41. OpinionHead says:

Speaking of "growing your own" I think that anything you grow yourself, for yourself, should be ok. If not, who is to say that government control over growing tomatoes is a far reach?

  42. OpinionHead says:

Maybe it is because I live in the country, but I have never seen one of those labels, my frsh fruit and veggies are just that, fresh, even at Wally World.

  43. OpinionHead says:

Food, isn't that what corn and grain was used for, before it was used to make fuel?

    • Aquariaqueen says:

Food, and, ummm, some fine alcoholic beverages, LOL.

    • sewbusy says:

we had a surplus of corn and have been using it to make grocery sacks from cornstarch and packing "peanuts" that were biodegradable – long before the food/fuel debates. This was partly because of research efforts funded by corn growers to support the market.
Now research is progressing in ethanol production from corn stalks etc. and grasses.

  44. KyserSose says:

We should all have the skin it is going to take to get this country back on track… So with that said… let's not wrap around the Axel with how someone makes a point or the point they make. ~Kyser Sose~

  45. Cliff_brown says:

The first I heard about radiating fresh produce was when I was an agriculture major at Mississippi State University. That was in the early 80's. It can be used to stop the ripening process then restart it after a long transport. That is why home grown tomatoes taste better than store bought. Other than killing some nutrients and preventing the inoculation of germs we must build immunity to, it is harmless. For years no label was required. It is the label itself that raises the most red flags. It looks to much like the organic label.

  46. PageD says:

For clarification, you want us to wise up on this, where is your knowledge on this topic! I will help you out, the following information can be found online, but you read for yourself and then you can decide if we need to wise up or not.
Research, most of which was conducted or funded by the U.S. government, revealed a wide range of health problems in animals that ate irradiated food: premature death, fatal internal bleeding, a rare form of cancer, stillbirths and other reproductive problems, genetic damage, organ malfunctions and nutritional deficiencies, to name a few.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) admits that no toxicology research has been conducted in the past 20 years. Consequently, scientists have little or no idea whether irradiated food is safe for human consumption.

From a nutritional perspective, exposing food to the equivalent of up to 1 billion chest x-rays depletes vitamins, often significantly. Especially vulnerable are A, the B-complex, C, E, and beta-carotene.

    • Dav912 says:

Yea but Obama's trying to make you eat the contaminated food .
because they are concerned about your food safety, H.R. 875 Food Safety Modernization Act of 2009

Take action and contact your local CSA farmers (many of whom are unaware of this bill):

      This is NAIS on steroids!

    • KhetaAmenti says:

Could you please cite these US studies, because ignorant me couldn't find them. The radiation passes thru the food, that's why the FDA, USDA, AMA and WHO all approve irradiation. Spices have been irradiated for over 20 years. Where did you get your figure of a billion chest x-rays? Do you use a microwave?
My facts are from "Myths, Lies, and Downright Stupidity" by John Stossel

    • acheyjake says:

1 BILLION chest X-rays??? Talk about pulling numbers out of your…..I'm just saying.

  47. doodlebug40 says:

I so agree! Good work! Some of the problem with our country is we don't do our own research and look for the answers oursleves and put too much trust in the government! People have GOT to get real!

  48. Get OFF this "green" crap. People have and are making MILLIONS off of natural anything. IT is UNCALLED for. Allow FARMERS, not CORPS to grow our food and get it on the shelves. But DO NOT tamper with MY food. The government is a SCREW UP and I for one do NOT want them dictating that the ONLY food I can buy is that which they have a hand in. Shall we count the MANY cancers and such due to no doubt the crap they(gov) puts in and on our food!!!

  49. Roy_Howell says:

No problem with me, bring it on. More sensationalism over nothing. Seems VERY safe and of course will save LOTS of money and reduce food that easily spoils and goes to waste.

  50. jaeteekae says:

Research is an interesting topic. I have eaten and enjoyed "irradiated" food off and on for almost 50 years, having enjoyed a nice meal in the early 1060's of roast beef, strawberries and numerous other items that had been irradiated and stored for an extended (months to a year) periods of time. If there were two jars of peanut butter on the store shelf, one irradiated, I know which one I would take. My "research is first hand experience!

    • acheyjake says:

That is not just and not American.

      Thanks for reading!

  51. jaeteekae says:

Oh, come on now. I believe they read it enough to make sure their earmarks were in it before they signed it.

  52. truthfairy says:

Irradiated food does not scare me. The sun irradiates everything. My son had to wear an irradiation meter when he served on a nuclear sub – it registered less than when he was on land.

  53. squrlnut says:

I believe that whether or not the food is radiated is not the issue, the willingness of the industry to tell the truth is the core of the matter. They seem shy of telling the truth."And ye shall know the truth and the truth shall make ye free."

  54. jaeteekae says:

Thank you I will. So labelled products will be my first choice whenever I can find them. The few times I've found them and/or tried them, I have found such products to be safe and quite good.

  55. BigJohn12 says:

The radiation is long gone by the time you get the product. The food is exposed to the radiation, not mixed with it. I honestly think that people believe that the food is radioactive after it is treated.

  56. recalldems says:

I hope every American Citizen sees this and acts on it. Thanks Glenn for your leading the fight to take back our Great Country from those bobble heads in DC and all around the country.

  57. recalldems says:

You can be sure those Democrats who signed the Stimulus Bill without reading it would never sign a contract to buy a car, house or enter into any other legal matter before reading it or having it read by an attorney. Then, those irresponsible persons seemed so eager to please Reid & Pelosi that they threw aside all reasoning and signed away the futures of our children and grandchildren. They did this with full knowledge they were throwing us to the wolves of not being able to have heat, food, medication, and all other necessities of life. LETS THROW ALL OF THEM OUT OFFICE.
